Protests caused by untold suffering — Tsvangirai

HARARE - President Robert Mugabe is out of touch with the magnitude of Zimbabweans’ untold suffering, hence his failure to appreciate the reason behind the current wave of protests, MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai said.

Speaking in Chitungwiza, where he visited 62-year-old Lilian Chinyerere who was beaten up by police during last Friday’s protest, Tsvangirai said “Zimbabwe’s crisis is far deeper than they (Mugabe and Zanu PF) can appreciate”.

He said “that’s why there is continued pressure from the people. It’s a justifiable cause”.

“There are no jobs, people are living through vending, but no one is buying those items because there is no money.”

Tsvangirai — Mugabe’s long-time rival — castigated the police, saying “it is taboo to beat one’s mother in the African culture”.

“It shows the extent of how far this regime has become rogue, considering the manner in which it is responding to people’s expressions.”

He dismissed claims that he is the one who is pushing people to demonstrate against 92-year-old Mugabe.

“People are angry, they are not being sent to demonstrate but there is nothing to do because they are hungry.

“They are saying I am the one who is sending people to demonstrate but its hunger which is pushing people to express their frustration.”

Chinyerere said she was shocked to see police officers attacking her, as she had not provoked them.

“I was just seated. I told them (police) I was not feeling well but they said they did not care.

“I am still feeling some pain, but I am going to participate in the next demonstration because I saw the evil side of the police,” she said.

Last Friday, protestors — who were taking part in the National Electoral Reform (Nera) — were brutally assaulted by police before they were dispersed.

Nera, a grouping of 18 political parties, had planned to demonstrate against Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) on outstanding electoral reforms.

The heavy-handed police defied a court order clearing the demonstration, as they went on to thwart the protest, resulting in running battles with protestors.

tsvangison yu are the one who is out of touch,yu are the author of our problems after yu internationalised yo grievances after yu were soundly beaten in an election,yu called for sanctions because yu could not get to statehouse, umdala wethu, edgar tekere, ndabaningi sithole all lost elections but unlike yu they had no egos and were not stooges of the whiteman, they put the country first, the sanctions placed on our country at your behest cripled the economy, hospitals had no drugs,a lot of critical sectors became dysfunctional,as a result the masses suffered just for yu to be at statehouse when clearly yu are out of depth for the top job,yu dont have a decent education and lack the vision to lead this country

Iran,Cuba, and many other countries are under sanctions but their citizens are not suffering. Mugabe managed to brainwash people but his propaganda about sanctions. Smith was even under worse sanctions but the economy was functional. It is these corrupt Zanu ministers who have destroyed Zim not sanctions which poor minds are made o believe.

Yes pple need change. It is clear as daylihgt.Va Mugabe s time was yestaday not tomorow.Va Mugabe is just fortunate there was all along weak opposition leadership. Its pple, the masses that had always stood up against him, leaderless.Bt now Zanu itself is now opposition to him.The likes of va Mutasa ochestrating seriouse threats to va Mugabe ,it now looks like time is up.Mutasa is now putting his knowledge n training into action against va Mugabe. He is the brains behind opposition unity.Tsvangirai couldnt have.Zanu watchout his vaMutasa. He wasnt CIO minister for nothing. He wasnt close to Mugabe all these yrs for nothing.Mutasa did not ditch Zanu bt ditched Mugabe, not for nothing. He had seen his friend is finnished, time to jump ship to Mujuru ,when they both were still in zanu.So vaMutasa its all pointing at yu.What now sir.Yu seem to be in charge now in opposition .Is it to retire va Mugabe or its all zanu including yo own remnants still in zanu.THE COMRADES ARE KEENLY WATCHING.

viola gwena - 1 September 2016

Tete Viola Gwena, Didmus Mutasa is also now vintage stuff and not fit for purpose. At over 80 years of age, he should have retired from politics alongside with Robert Mugabe many years ago. Remember civil servants retire at 65 years of age and this should also apply to ministers and top government officials like Tobayiwa Mudede and Mariyawanda Nzuwa etc etc.

Chimbwido Warvet - 1 September 2016

julien Moore you are stupid idiot pple are suffering and you saying give him chance .what have he done for 36yrs

chitovea - 1 September 2016

@Chimbwi. The reason why soccer players retire at around 30 to 35 is becoz of the emerging yungsters in their 20s ,taking over team positions, thru skill. Now Zim politics is supposed to be like that bt nope. The yungsters lack skill.Look at what old Didymus has managed to do in a short time in opposition politics. He has skillfully pushed out the Bitis,Ncubes and Tajamuka.he now leads the execution of opposition initiatives. So again Mugabe has been there for past 40 yrs and yu yungsters have not managed to move him an inch.So why shuld we trust yu for change.Look at what yu organised yestaday ,nearly zero.

viola gwena - 1 September 2016

Which untold suffering Tsvangson. You engineered this suffering by calling for sanctions and this is where we are now. Remember your ''muchashaisisa'' mantra in Mutare. All these opposition parties are power hungry, they want to rule by hook or crook. Hatidi zvimbwasungata isu. Love your country and lets work. Zimbabwe is a vibrant democracy and if in doubt check what happens in North Korea. You have been given too much freedom in Zim and 1 day it will vanish and you will cry like babies when the real dark days arrive.
