'Govt breeding unrest'

HARARE - President Robert Mugabe’s government is breeding unrest by trying to quash peaceful protests, political activist Sten Zvorwadza said.

He said Mugabe and his ruling Zanu PF are the ones responsible for the deepening Zimbabwean crisis.

“As citizens of Zimbabwe, we note with great concern the increase of State repression of the past months. What the government doesn’t know is that they are breeding unrest, they must not blame the citizens because they are inviting them to retaliate,” he told the Daily News.

Zvorwadza said instead of devising solutions to address the current economic quagmire, the government is creating more crises by brutalising peaceful protestors.

“We want to protest peacefully but what is surprising is the police are trying to make sure that our demonstrations end up violent.”

Zvorwadza — who has been thrashed by police several times and was recently hospitalised following a brutal attack by the law enforcers — said they were not intending to overthrow the government illegally, but only want Mugabe to lend long-suffering Zimbabweans an ear.

“Our government doesn’t want to listen, people are hungry but they are beaten. Zanu PF is acting like an irresponsible father who beats his child because he or she has told him that there is nothing to eat in the house,” the fearless Zvorwadza said, before he further questioning that “is it unlawful to tell your father that you are hungry”.

“We are worried by the action of our government but I want to warn them this is just the start of bigger things to come if they fail to listen to the people. They must start to take the people’s concerns seriously because people are more powerful than politics.”

Zvorwadza said the police brutality will not provide food on the table, but result in more protests against Mugabe, who has ruled Zimbabwe for 36 years since independence.
