Pasuwa names strong squad

HARARE - Warriors coach Kalisto Pasuwa has maintained the core group of players that helped Zimbabwe qualify for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations for next month’s dead rubber qualifier against Guinea.

Zimbabwe, who sealed qualification for the tournament to be held in Gabon next January, travel to Conakry on September 3 for their final Group L match.

Dynamos defender Godknows Murwira and Ngezi Platinum goalkeeper Nelson Chadya are the notable new inclusions in Pasuwa’s squad while Mamelodi Sundowns forward Khama Billiat has been left out due to his side’s commitments in the Caf Champions League.

Murwira has been drafted as a direct replacement for CAPS United right back Hardlife Zvirekwi who is suspended for the match after accumulating three yellow cards.

The foreign-based players — defender Costa Nhamoinesu, striker Knowledge Musona, Matthew Rusike, Willard Katsande, Cuthbert Malajila and Nyasha Mushekwi among others have all been included in the team.

Warriors team manager Sharif Mussa said: “All players are expected to troop into camp on August 28 and training sessions begin the following day.”

Pasuwa said, despite having already sealed their qualification they will go to Conakry seeking maximum points.

“This match is still important to the team because we are going to use it as a yardstick to measure our progress as a unit and our preparedness for the Gabon Afcon finals,” he told the Zifa website.

“That is why only Khama Billiat, whom we thought might have fatigue issues is the only regular player intentionally left out of the squad. We also want to maintain our unbeaten record.”
