Zim to host Old Mutual National Choir Festival

HARARE - History is set to be made for local choral music lovers when Zimbabwe hosts the regional leg of the popular Old Mutual National Choir Festival at the Celebration Centre in Harare on 27 August.

This year more than 100 choirs from South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Swaziland are participating in regional finals at various venues over the next few months.  All regional winners will proceed to the finals to be held in South Africa from December 10 to 11.

In previous years Zimbabwean choral groups took part in the Limpopo Province regional competition. The talent and enthusiasm they displayed over the years prompted Old Mutual to make Zimbabwe a stand-alone region this year.

Old Mutual Zimbabwe chief executive officer Jonas Mushosho is thrilled that Zimbabwe will be hosting its own finals. He has applauded Chitungwiza Harmony Singers, who came third in the standard category in last year’s finals, and all the other local choirs that have showcased Zimbabwe’s rich choral music heritage.

“Together they inspired the decision to establish Zimbabwe as a separate participating region,” he said.

He added: “Choral music plays an important role in the lives of many communities. It is part of the rich fabric of our African nation – and it helps to build bridges. Old Mutual is a proud title sponsor of this prestigious event as we continually strive to support the great communities where we operate. It is also aligned to our mission of helping to cultivate excellence and enabling positive futures.

“We expect people to come in their numbers and we’ve selected a top class venue that will reflect the stature and uplifting spirit of the Old Mutual National Choir Festival.”
