Zimra official in $1m fraud

HARARE - A Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) accountant who reportedly fleeced his employer of more than $1 million by diverting refunds from clients into fraudulently-created accounts appeared in court yesterday.

Tapuwa Evans Chidemo, 44, is currently out of custody on $1 000 bail.

He appeared before Harare magistrate Tendai Mahwe for his routine remand proceedings and will be back in court on August 24.

Chidemo is jointly-charged with Alfred Makaya and Enerst Matarutse who are already on remand over the same allegations.

He was the sole user of Paynet for Zimra’s region one refunds account.

Chidemo had master and administrator access rights to the system that enabled him to make changes in Paynet and could create or delete batches and any transaction in the refund amount batch.

The complainant is Zimra represented by Shadreck Pfende, the regional accountant responsible for approving payments, revenue analysis and compiling reports.

Prosecutor Peter Kachirika alleged that between January 2010 and August 2015, Chidemo received refund schedules from Zimra value added tax section for clients’ processing.

The court heard that during the said period Chidemo changed bank accounts of legitimate Zimra clients, including Trust Bank Corporation, Earthlink Technologies, Zimbabwe Jiansu International, Bath Farm, Us Embassy, Unki Mine and United Foods into illegitimate bank accounts.

Chidemo then engaged illegitimate recipients and connived with them to make 105 fraudulent bank transfers before withdrawing the money for his personal benefit.

The offence came to light after a legitimate Zimra client made a follow up on their refunds prompting Pfende to trace all the transactions made by Chidemo and unearthed the fraudulent activity.

According to the State, Zimra was prejudiced $1 215 623, 42 and nothing was recovered.

A report was lodged with the police leading to Chidemo’s arrest.

@naome..what fail to appreciate is that mugabe and his ministers have created conditions in which theft flourishes and is the only gateway to wealth...in that respect, they are guilt as charged.

@Noami... this poor girl/woman does not know that ZANU PF and its leadership, including Robert Mugabe, are held responsible for governing this country. They are all held responsible and accountable for all the wrongs that are going on in this country. They have created an environment where thieves flourish.
