Shamu to topple Mutsvangwa

HARARE - Ex-liberation fighters aligned to the generation (G40) Zanu PF faction have tipped Chegutu East MP Webster Shamu (pictured) to replace Christopher Mutsvangwa as chairperson of the Zimbabwe National Liberation and War Veterans Association, the Daily News has learnt.

This follows President Robert Mugabe’s directive last month that the war veterans’ leadership backing Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s presidential ambitions be removed from office.

The war vets had announced their disengagement with the 92 year-old ruler, citing his alleged dictatorial tendencies and failure to fix the prevailing economic crisis.

However, there have been concerns that of all the members of the war vets faction led by Manicaland Provincial minister Mandi Chimene had questionable war credentials, leaving them vulnerable to attacks by their rivals led by Mutsvangwa.

While Chimene refused to discuss the impending coming on board of Shamu saying “I do not want to be forced into that discussion”, sources privy to the goings on in the camp said the move was meant “to counter the Team Lacoste claims”.

“Everybody is agreed that Shamu is probably the only war veteran who is acceptable to all former freedom fighters because his credentials are not in doubt and he has also not engaged in fights with anyone, so his leadership will disarm the Mutsvangwa group that has been saying Chimene and her faction are not genuine,” the insider said.

Another Zanu PF insider added that a recent move by Zanu PF to have Shamu, whose political life has been hanging in the balance in the past two years, was part of the strategy.

“The first thing that the war veterans have done is to push the Mashonaland West Provincial executive to recommend that Shamu’s case be dropped and that he be brought back to the fold.

“Now what is left is for the politburo to endorse the recommendation while the process leading to the war veterans congress is finalised and by then, Shamu will be ready for the post.”

Shamu was slapped with a five-year suspension from Zanu PF after he was accused of backing ousted former Vice President Joice Mujuru — now leader of Zimbabwe People First (ZPF) opposition party.

The G40 camp has of late been wooing back former Mujuru sympathisers, especially MPs, to boost their numbers in the face of bruising battle for control of the party against Mnangagwa and his allies.

One other perceived Mujuru ally, former Labour minister Nicholas Goche, has since been reinstated in Zanu PF.

Goche was along with Shamu and several other senior officials suspended last year on allegations of working with Mujuru in a plot to assassinate Mugabe.

About 50 members including the likes of former Indigenisation minister Francis Nhema, the majority of who were perceived allies of the ZPF leader have appealed against their suspension and expulsion.

Ha ha the circus continues. From underwear thief in Moza to a Dj who was exiled in Moza for theft related issues. And you vote & campaign for these people? At first I thought it was a mere leadership credibility crisis but clearly there is electorate credibility crisis amongst the majority that vote or are engaged with the political process most certainly within zanu for sure.

If Goche and Mujuru had been guilt of plotting to assassinate Mugabe, been rubbished for such a evil act, why is he now back in ZANU PF. Why was he not tried and sent to prison. Now Shamu was considered guilt as well and lost his seat in Chegutu, for sympathizing with Mujuru, why is now considered for War Vet Chair. Why is Robert Gabriel Mugabe and Grace Mugabe not ashamed, confess that this plot against other ZANU PF members was just a dirty ploy to have Grace closer to the throne. How could a leader of a party be so evil. Goche was rubbished and even suffered a mild stroke for no crime he committed, accused him of siding with Anglo American Hippo Valley and Triangle Estate CEO Mtsambiwa for plotting against Mugabe. A commit was set to investigate, tax payers money wasted paying ZANU PF officials who went to Chiredzi to investigate, yet all they knew was this was falsehood. My question is that to what extend does Mugabe Robert Gabriel Mugabe, President of Zimbabwe, Commander in Chief of the Defense Forces, former chair of UA and SADC, Chancellor of all state Universities, First Secretary of ZANU PF account to abusing power, wasting state resources pursuing personal agendas, lying deliberately and accuse people of what they have not done. Many people suffered from these false accusation?

Divide and rule has taken shape now. Veterans way are you forced to start a war on your own? See what is being done by those calling for these shots what they are doing to destroy what was fought for. Back biting is very dangerous, Let us try to defend the system not individuals as to what others are clamoring for without revisiting our constitution. I can say power hungry is the problem some of us. Let build our economy and creat employment .

@Amina.Good narration.Yu must be a lawyer ,if not consider part time and perhaps ,pple like Goche n Shamhu may summon enuf guts to take on the issue in court.Bt yu see ,the revolution has men who wuld rather stroke n die ,hoping to be recalled later by the same pple that cooked cases on them. They cannot fathom the idea of becoming their own man, stand up n stare eyeball to eyeball n declare their innocence.Look at Shamhu.A very timid man,no guts at all.A simple prays singer, even during the war.Thats all he was, singing n playing music. So to expect this man to even plot to unsit Mugabe is way too much for his character. He wuld rather run than witness a dogfight in the streets.A very small, cheap man.I as a woman ,culd borrow his manhood and do sterling job in no tyme than he can muster the year.

A life-line to a tried and tested fraudster/criminal, corrupt to the core, tipped for the War vets leadership. Remember he wrecked Central Film Laboratories and he is an avid ass-licker/hero-worshipper of high magnitude, going by the nom-de-guerre Charles Ndlovu earned in non-active combative roles.

Now DJs are war vets? Come on people be serious. For how many hours did this RBC DJ fight?

Sagitarr - 17 August 2016

The credentials and history of Webster Shamu (aka) Charles Ndhlovu are a public record. He evaded Rhodesian law under the guise of attending the Ali/Foreman boxing match in the then Zaire . He then made his way to Mozambique where he ended up becoming the "Voice of Zimbabwe" anchor because of his RBC experience. Upon his return home after independence, he played obscure and peripheral roles in government until he was fished out to become a Deputy and later full Minister. Someone please tell me how does he qualify to become the Chairman of the War veterans with such a scanty and dodgy record, notwithstanding his fresh graduation from the ZANU College of Political Rehabilitation/Exile for hobnobbing with Mai Mujuru. One of his colleagues, the late Patrick Bajilla, once remarked , Webster has really lost the plot since coming back from Mozambique. He never learnt anything is still wandering and in need of direction to this day.

President Mugabe is on record for having said the War Veterans Association was an affiliate of ZANU PF and that they have nothing to do with the affairs of the party. Why is the ruling political party now so concerned to the extent of trying to impose Webster Shamu, a well known mujiba, to be the chairman of the War Veterans Association? And will he be acceptable to the war veterans when one considers that the current leadership of the war veterans led by Chris Mutsvangwa, still has three years running before the expiry of its term of office. It goes without saying this is unconstitutional and therefore unacceptable to the war veterans. It is like saying Kasukuwere should be the President of Zimbabwe before the term of office for Robert Mugabe comes to an end in 2018. Mugabe will not accept this and so will be the case with Chris Mutsvangwa.
