Minter wins Old Mutual Zim Ladies Open

HARARE - Young golf sensation Danielle Bekker pushed top female golfer Claire Minter to the wire during the Old Mutual Zimbabwe Ladies’ Golf Union (ZLGU) Open Strokeplay Championships over the weekend.

In the end, Minter needed to maintain a cool head to edge the 13-year-old in a three-hole playoff at Borrowdale Brooke Golf Course.

Her relief was palpable after she sunk a putt for victory before punching the air.

Bekker, who has represented the Zimbabwe Ladies golf team in several regional tournaments, had rallied from behind to tie off the tournament following rounds of 79, 77 and 70

Minter opened her campaign with a 76 on Friday before firing 78 in the second round on Saturday to head into the final round with a two shot lead over Bekker.

The teenager with the experience of high level competition in Europe and the US was able to crawl back with the second lowest score (70) in the final round, one more than former champion Yollanda Mubaiwa’s 69.

A Alfazama finished third after rounds of 71, 73 and 76 while young golfer Emily Jones 76, 75 and 72  for  total 223.

Mubaiwa finished in fifth place with a total 225 following rounds of 84, 72 and 69.

Bekker’s second place finish follows her third place finish in the Girls 13 division at the United States Kids Golf Teen World Championship played at the Mid Pines Inn and Golf Club in North Carolina earlier this month.
