Magistrate blasts Lumumba

HARARE - Harare provincial magistrate Vakayi Chikwekwe yesterday blasted former Zanu PF youth leader William Mutumanje — also known as Acie Lumumba — and told him to “put his house in order” after he brought a third different lawyer to represent him yesterday.

Last week, Mutumanje — who recently launched his Viva Zimbabwe political party —dropped his initial lawyer Arshie Mugiya and hired Nelson Chamisa before he engaged advocate Zvikomborero Chadambuka this week.

Mutumanje is accused of insulting President Robert Mugabe and faces charges of undermining the authority of or insulting the president as defined in Section 33 (2) (b) of the Criminal Law.

He was represented by Mugiya throughout remand proceedings before.

“I will not entertain you,” Chikwekwe told Chadambuka, adding that “…go and sort out your issues with Mugiya”.

“As it stands, on each and every remand we are seeing a new lawyer for the accused person and with the number of lawyers we have in this country, I wonder how many other legal counsels the accused person is going to engage,” Chikwekwe fumed.

“The last time it was Chamisa, at first Mugiya and now it’s you. Everything is marred with confusion and accused ought to put his house in order.”

The case was subsequently postponed to August 11.

During the constitutional court referral, Mutumanje tore into Mugabe and challenged the nonagenarian to confront him personally about the insult.

“…Yes, I said f**k you to Robert Mugabe. He is a political party leader and I am too. I and him will exchange political differences and expressions,” Mutumanje said.

“It is just an expression and can mean what you want it to mean at that time. If you deem that me saying f**k you is an insult it is just politics and we exchange expressions.”

“I can say this court is f**king awesome, or I am f**king angry or I like f**king. The context in which I said it was an expression of displeasure in how the president has cheated this country for 36 years. It was my disapproval of president’s ability to keep his promise as per manifesto he presented.”

Mutumanje blamed Mugabe for ignoring the plight of the people in this harsh socio-economic and political environment.

“…how he failed to meet the 10 goals pertaining the government blueprints in the name of ZimAsset, then I believe that the president has been f**king me for 36 years and us too,” he added.

“In politics he expresses himself too and just a few days ago he tore into opposition politicians and activists saying those who were not happy with how Zimbabwe is being run should simply go to countries where they are happy…now that is an insult.”

“I believe in the Constitution of this country and that it protects my freedom of expression and allows be to be a free citizen of this country but my liberties are now being challenged.”

“The president works for me and his job is to be answerable to me and I believe that we being here talking about this is a waste of time that the president should be busy creating jobs. If he feels that he was insulted he must come and face me!”

According to State papers, charges against Mutumanje arose on June 30 this year when he was launching his political outfit at a Harare hotel.
