Matemadanda, Nhando arrested

HARARE - President Robert Mugabe continued with his crackdown against the leadership of the war veterans when police arrested Victor Matemadanda and Francis Nhando yesterday, on the day their spokesperson Douglas Mahiya was freed on bail.

Matemadanda was arrested during lunch time as he made his way out of the Harare Magistrates’ Courts where he had been attending Mahiya’s bail ruling session, while Nhando handed himself over.

Their arrests come as civil society and the international community have taken a keen interest in the war veterans who stunningly announced they had cut their ties with the nonagenarian last month.

“They are being questioned at the law and order section,” their lawyer Shingi Mutumbwa told the Daily News yesterday.

In a letter to the police, Mutumbwa had indicated that they were making “arrangements to attend at your office tomorrow 2nd August, 2016 with … Matemadanda, Moyo and Bhilla as well as Kazingizi”.

But the police made their swoop before today’s arranged meeting. Mugabe, speaking at last week’s hastily-arranged meeting with a faction of war veterans opposed to Christopher Mutsvangwa’s national executive, berated the former freedom fighters for issuing a communiqué two weeks ago in which they savaged him and announced the termination of their long relationship with the nonagenarian which began during the liberation struggle in the mid 1970s.

War veterans have been one of Mugabe’s strongest pillars of support, playing particularly significant roles to keep the nonagenarian on the throne in the hotly-disputed 2000 and 2008 national elections which were both marred by serious violence and the murder of hundreds of opposition supporters. They said Mugabe’s continued stay in power was now a stumbling block to the country’s development, declaring he would be “a hard-sell” if he contested the watershed 2018 presidential elections.

Matemadanda and Nhando’s arrests are a continuation of the crackdown which was launched after Mugabe himself had said ominously that dissenting war veterans would be punished severely, just like what the ruling party did during the liberation struggle to delinquent freedom fighters.

It started with the arrest of Mahiya, who was facing charges of undermining and insulting Mugabe before his release yesterday.

Concept of divide and rule operates well in situation where resources are not evenly distributed. Yes in Zimbabwe, resources are supposedly biased towards the ruling elite. However to to cash shortages, their hands have to reach deep down into their pockets to remunerate their praise singers. The ploy by Chinamasa and Mugabe to try to introduce the bond notes, is to try to swindle the people of their hard earned currency and also to oil the machinery of brutality and rigging machines without any control. Now they can not pay the youth involved in brutality towards the citizen. These youth can not go out and not be paid. They can not be paid because there is no funds
