ZPL in promising start

HARARE - The Zimbabwe Premier League (cricket) kicked off last weekend with three being played in Harare and Masvingo.

ZPL is the premier domestic club cricket league 40-over competition which features top clubs from Harare, Bulawayo, Midlands and Masvingo.

Harare’s Vigne Cup champions Rainbow Sharks toppled Takashinga Patriot 1 by 12 runs at Takashinga Sports Club defending 219.

Sharks totalled 219/9 in 40 overs buoyed by Bezel Njanji’s 67 and Tinofara Mafusire’s 41 while Nigel Mupurura and Trevor Mutsamba picked three and two wickets respectively for the Patriots first team.

Rainbow spinner Kuda Munyede starred with the ball taking four wickets for 12 runs while his counterpart Milton Shumba took three wickets for 45 runs to restrict Takashinga Patriots to 207 all out with 11 balls remaining in the match as home team batsmen Roy Kaia (37) and Bernard Mlambo’s (34) efforts went in vain.

At Old Hararians Sports Club, Midlands’ Muzvezve Tigers beat Southern Lions from Masvingo by four wickets.

The Lions were tamed 106 all out in 33 overs- Tendai Chisoro and Alester Maregwede contributed 31 and 25 runs respectively while left-arm seamer Manson Chikowero took five wickets for eight runs and Tafara Chingwara picking two wickets for 30 before Muzvezve reached 107/6 in 22 overs to win the match by four wickets.


Muzvezve Tigers won the match by four wickets.

Southern Lions – 106 all out in 33 overs (Tendai Chisoro 31, Alester Maregwede 25; Manson Chikowero 5/8, Tafara Chingwara 2/30)

Muzvezve Tigers – 107 for 6 in 22 overs (Bright Matsiwe 55, Trevor Gwangu 18; Sydney Murombo 2/12, Tendai Chisoro 2/27)

Rainbow Sharks won the match by 12 runs.

Takashinga Patriots 1 – 207 all out in 38.5 overs (Roy Kaia 37, Bernard Mlambo 34; Kuda Munyede 4/12, Milton Shumba 3/45)

Eastern Lions won the match by one wicket.

Amakhosi – 217 for 9 in 40 overs (Kudzai Sauramba 87, Silent Mujaji 27; John Nyumbu 5/35)

Eastern Lions – 218 for 9 in 38.5 overs (Mduduzi Fuzwayo 48, Bonaparte Mujuru 36; Clive Chitumba 3/24, John Masara 2/23, Frank Mazvita 2/40)
