Pelandaba hosts Copa finals

HARARE - Gwanda’s Pelandaba Stadium will host this year’s edition of the Copa Coca- Cola Boys Under-16 and Girls Under-17 football finals following the completion of the provincial stage a fortnight ago.

In the boys’ category, defending champions Dewure from Masvingo will be joined by provincial mates Pamushana in their quest to ensure that the title remains in Masvingo.

From Harare, high-riding Churchill won the onus to represent the province while Chemhanza, Mashonaland East representatives will be itching to revenge for their semi-final exit at the hands of Dewure last year and possibly go all the way to lift the trophy.

But every team knows that it will not be an easy to walk to freedom as they have to work extremely hard to overcome competition from a 24-team competition.

Guinea Fowl from Midlands and Mashonaland Central’s Rujeko also pose serious threats in history is anything to go by.

In the girls’ category, Chidyamakono and Rufaro from Masvingo, Mashonaland Central’s Vimbai and Chipadze as well as Mabelreign Girls from Harare holds the pre-tournament favourites tag getting into the games.

All teams are expected to be in Gwanda tomorrow with the games kicking off on Saturday leading into the finals on Sunday.

Copa Coca-Cola is a schools grassroots football tournament which aims to identify, nurture and reward the best in young football talent.

And as the premier grassroots tournament it also seeks to unlock the ambitious dreams and possibilities of Africa’s football stars as well as to aspire young footballers to achieve their dreams through a renowned and respected Pan African soccer tournament.

The project started as a pilot project 28 years ago has become the hall mark of success in schools soccer, an important feeder for the country’s Under 17 national teams.

Former Warriors midfielder Alois Bunjira, left back Harlington Shereni and the current crop of national team players including goalkeeper Washington Arubi, hitman Knowledge Musona and midfielder Ovidy Karuru are all products of the Copa Coca Cola tournament designed to discover budding football talents.
