Lumumba arrested

HARARE - Leader of the newly-formed opposition party, Viva Zimbabwe, Acie Lumumba, who recently grabbed headlines when he insulted President Robert Mugabe with obscenities, has turned himself in.

The former Zanu PF Youth leader had been on Zimbabwe Republic Police wanted list since his sensational F-word utterances at the launch of his party last week.

In the company of his party’s spokesperson Agency Gumbo, Lumumba arrived at Harare Central Police Station with a broad smile belying the charges he faces if convicted.

He is likely to be charged with “criminal nuisance” as defined in section 46 (2) (v) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9.23.

However, the former Zanu PF MP aspirant for Hatfield does not seem deterred.

“The charges being laid against him are that of undermining the office of the president,” Gumbo said yesterday outside Harare Central Police Station.

“We understand that there was a whole week manhunt for...Lumumba and we thought that the sincerest thing to do was to bring him in so that the law can take its course,” he said.

“We know that it’s a piece of legislation that has never got a conviction, according to precedence.

“We intend to apply for bail through our lawyer.

“But nonetheless this does not take away the fact of the obtaining disaster in this country...We hear reports of several protests around the suburbs of Harare.

“One man might be locked up for expressing his frustration but that does not mean the frustration among the citizens has been eradicated, it’s still very much a thorn across the country,” he said.

According to the new party’s spokesperson, Viva Zimbabwe is “ready to face the law, to take up the matter with the courts.

“We believe its everyone’s right to speak against injustices in the country. We need a country that is better that addresses the ordinary men’s desires.”

Several people have been arrested in the past for insulting Mugabe but none has thus far been convicted.
