Father, son jailed 22 years for murder

MUTARE - A Chipinge man and his adult son have been jailed for a combined 22 years after they fatally assaulted a neighbour over a land dispute.

Shanda Mambanda and his son Mallen of Chipinge were caged 12 and 10 years respectively over the death of Benson Sithole.

Shanda’s wife was allegedly watching as the two fought and killed their neighbour.

It was the State’s case that the three were passing through their neighbour’s field on December 18, 2014 when he challenged them over their continued tillage of his field.

Sithole then attacked Mallen with a catapult which he then went on to wrestle from him.

Sithole then swung a hoe towards Mallen which missed him. The latter then armed himself with a hoe and chased after Sithole striking him on the head and back.

Shanda then jumped on Sithole who was lying on his back and pummelled him with clenched fists before they left him lying in the field.

Sithole later rose and followed them to their home where he asked for his knife and the hoe they had taken from him.

He was only discovered dead the following day and post-mortem results indicated that he had died from a cracked skull and broken neck.

Jane-Rose Matsikidze was prosecuting.

these reckless & aimless fist fights are still common among villagers and its sad that they can be fatal like this. its more common during election times when feuds of opposing parties degenerate into man-hunts and subsequent brawls. this is why some pple believe that africa is still a jungle!
