Mujuru takes off her gloves

HARARE - Former vice president and now leader of the Zimbabwe People First (ZPF), Joice Mujuru, is finally hitting the campaign trail ahead of the much-anticipated 2018 national elections — beginning with a star rally scheduled for Stanley Square in Bulawayo on Saturday.

Her buoyant spokesperson, Gift Nyandoro, told the Daily News yesterday that the popular widow of the revered late liberation struggle icon, General Solomon Mujuru, had now completed putting together a comprehensive and countrywide political programme, as she bids to become Zimbabwe’s first female leader by removing President Robert Mugabe from power in two years’ time.

He said the programme included “the mother of the nation” meeting her supporters around the country and “offering practical solutions to the myriad economic challenges that Zimbabwe is facing”.

“The mother of the nation will make her maiden appearance before the nation as leader of ZPF on Saturday where she will address supporters at Stanley Square in Bulawayo.

“It’s at that venue that Zimbabweans will get solutions from the future president of the country to all the issues relating to their suffering, including the cash crisis, shortage of medicines in hospitals and the unacceptably high unemployment rate among many other pressing issues,” Nyandoro said.

By moving to officially launch her campaign, Mujuru has now snuffed discordant voices within her fledgling party, as well as snide remarks by her political competitors that ZPF had suffered a stillbirth because she was reluctant to take Mugabe head-on for a number of reasons — including a supposed fear of being arrested on untested allegations of corruption, that was allegedly committed while she was in government.

Mujuru was hounded out of Zanu PF and the government in December 2014 on dubious charges of plotting to oust from power and assassinate Mugabe.

She had appeared to give grist to rumours that she had no appetite to tangle with Mugabe by going into hibernation soon after launching ZPF early this year — and also failing to conduct a single public meeting since then.

But Nyandoro retorted yesterday that the allegations that she had developed cold feet were being peddled by Mugabe and Zanu PF party as an act of self-preservation by the ruling party.

“Let me state quite categorically that such Machiavellian political tactics will not work, because Mujuru is absolutely determined to rescue long-suffering Zimbabweans from Zanu PF”.

“From Bulawayo, the president (Mujuru) will address a rally in Harare before she heads to Masvingo and Manicaland, and then the rest of the length and breadth of the country, laying out her vision and giving policy direction on how ZPF, the only solution there is in the country, will extricate Zimbabweans from the Zanu PF-induced suffering.

“We know that Zanu PF has devised a strategy to infiltrate us and derail our progress to make sure that the party does not see the light of day but they have since failed because we are on a roll.

“The party is much stronger and intact than ever before now, and we are expecting tens of thousands of supporters to throng Stanley Square.

“We also invite all supporters of the opposition party in waiting, Zanu PF, who face an uncertain future because of the ugly succession fights in the party to come and hear the future president speaking,” Nyandoro said.

He also moved to dispel recent media reports that there was growing disharmony in ZPF and that some of her supporters who had come from Zanu PF were ditching her for the former liberation movement.

“If you are talking about reports that there is one of our members by the name Jim Kunaka, who has supposedly left us, then to be honest with you, I am shocked because when I checked with our data base we don’t have anyone with such a name.

“Maybe it could be that Kunaka, who led the notorious Chipangano in Zanu PF, may have tried to join ZPF only to realise that the party was not for those whose hands were dripping with blood, and then left before being given a membership card.

“Concerning reports that the party was sidelining its elders Rugare Gumbo and Didymus Mutasa, again that is unfounded because you have never heard them complaining about that.

“We value our elders so much for their wisdom and they are the ones who give the party inspiration,” Nyandoro said.

By firmly signalling her desire to compete for the leadership of the country in 2018, Mujuru is now set to do battle with Mugabe, who is Zanu PF’s presidential candidate, as well as indefatigable opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai in those much-awaited polls.

But how things will eventually pan out then is hard to tell at this point, given the growing calls for her and Tsvangirai to join hands and take on Mugabe and Zanu PF together.

When Mujuru was previously asked if she would consider working with Tsvangirai, she indicated then that she was more than willing to do so — a sentiment that is shared by the MDC president.

This possibility has caused visible anxiety within Zanu PF which is ravaged by its seemingly unstoppable factional and succession wars that have seen embattled Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa come under increasing pressure — amid ruling party fears that the grand coalition could spell doom for Mugabe and his minions.

As much as I would like to believe it and no matter how hard I try, I still do not believe that you are real opposition and someone genuinely opposed to President Mugabe's style of rule. Publicly accused of being a spy and working with foreign agents, massive corruption, all extremely serious allegations that would have had most genuine activists tortured and thrown behind bars for many years? Yet you somehow escaped any formal investigation never mind a few nights behind bars? And, if you were genuine you would have gone public about some of the dirty and devious goings on within Government but especially explaining how the previous two elections were rigged thereby denying the majority of people their leader. Ma Joice, not unless we see something tangible coming from you most of us will continue to treat you as a fake.

Pin your hopes on Mujuru at your own peril. Zanu and those with strong ties to it need to be allowed to die a natural political death. If Mrs Mujuru and her backers were not thrown out of the party they will still be in it and singing praises like Kasquiery, Mnangagwa and Jona and co are doing right now.

@jojo,thanks 4 checking on me,i am back and awaiting the president as to when we start the country wide tour as yu can read aunt joice is said to be readying for hers,it is important that we maintain visibility on the ground so the electorate can interact with us as we articulate our policy positions to the masses, mind yu millions of people are registered to vote and its not only the frustrated @samanyika,@masamba,@chimata,who will be voting, that trio is free to put their votes to waste by voting tsvangirai, the majority of zimbos who reside in the rural areas will carry the vote as they bore the brunt of the liberation struggle and clearly know which party best represents their aspirations

truth - 15 June 2016

Which aspirations of rural people have been met by Zanu PF since 1980 - making people dependent on food aid? Dishing out what doesn't belong to you to fool people that you're philanthropic? Makes one sick! Welcome to the battle Joice! I'm still shocked that your focus still seems to be restricted towards attracting Zanu PF members why? Is your party closed to everyone else outside of that narrow subset?

AND @ truth is only rejoicing because of the rural vote. Rural people who are "ignorant and contribute nothing to the economy as they are being frogmarched to the polling station without even making a well thought decision. Im not saying that they are bad themselves but those who have the authority to frighten them are bad. This is the truth that @truth must be revealing. Right now people in rural areas always depent on those in urban areas because of the shift in the balance of economy. They get almost everything from the urban areas, yet we see @truth and his party always taking advantage of this vulnerable constituency of voters. Wake up @truth and your team, do something for the plight of rural voters who always "support you" because of fear for the unkown.

We still have people like @truth bragging that only people in rural areas had to bear the brunt of the liberation struggle. This assertion is fallaciuos if not misleading. Some people who took part during the liberation struggle have since shifted to urban areas with many being frustrated by unfulfilled promises by @truths and CDES. Recently they were promised heaven on earth through ZIMASSET but they only woke up one day to find poverty, unemployment, violence, hatred, intimidation, corruption, man made food shortages, shortages of drugs in hospitals among a host of other problems. They have lost faith in your falsehoods @truths. Indeed they no longer want to hear your exagarrated song by the name sanctions , sanctions, sanctions.

Zanu pf thrive on violence and intimidation.Mst rural people if you ask them ,they will tell you that they only vote zanu pf out of fear. They are threatened with all death, disappearance, they are denied food aid and all sorts of barbaric acts.So for one to say that they have support in the rural areas is mischief of the highest order.Munobatira vanhu pfuti movamanikidza kuti vakuvhotereyi and you claim to have their support! These rural folks will be in dire need of rehabilitation and counselling soon after the departure of this diabolic animal called Zanu Pf.Its a party of crooks, thugs, thieves you name it.

She must explain her role in Gukurahundi and atone. The 1980s are not a closed chapter in Mthwakazi and indeed in many of our humane citizens of Zimbabwe - this is the weakness of Mujuru's party. Sweeping things under the carpet and expecting people to forget is a ZANU PF tactic. Now that she is no longer ZANU PF; she must openly abandon this tactic and be more open and forthcoming. We will respect and forgive her for that. Why apologise selectively? Independent Zimbabwe's history started in 1980; not 1999!!

Kwakubus'uMambo no Mzilikazi - 15 June 2016

@kwakubus'umambo no mzilikazi, the gukurahundi issue is not an election ace,any party that campaigns on that platform is bound to get disappointed as that sad chapter affected a small sector of the population,15% or so,however as zanu pf we have taken steps ta adress that such as the unity accord, and we have tasked the VP to lead national healing and reconcilliation in the hope that opportunists dont use such a dark period for electioneering, how ever we continue to meet resistance in uniting the people of zimbabwe as some people on both sides would rather divide our people than unite them

truth - 15 June 2016

Paidamoyo Muzulu has just been released after spending for nights in jail - for what? For merely standing up and opposing the Mugabe regime. Some of his friends are still detained for the same reason. All of us know that President Mugabe does not tolerate any REAL opposition. On the other hand Joice Mujuru, the leader of the People First Party and someone who has been accused of betraying ZANU PF and making plans to oust Mugabe still somehow roams free without even spending one night in jail for the serious treasonable crimes she supposedly committed? This makes many of us wonder about the legitimacy of her and her party? Never will I vote for her.

Kokorodza - 15 June 2016

@ truth So to ZANU PF, the killing of a nation's citizens is about numbers? It has to be about how many black people are affected in the first place for it to be an election issue? Now I see why the white race all over the world thinks black lives count for nothing. You see White nations going to war over the abduction of just one white person; their citizen. Blacks think nothing of 15 000 or even 1 million of their own race dying. Looks like Ian Smith and apartheid in South Africa had all the reason to kick you out to Homelands and concentration camps whilst looking after their own whites. You lack self respect. You don't see yourselves as human beings. No Unity comes out of duress as happened through Gukurahundi and your 1987 Unity Agreement. Read that documents; you can download it - it is clearly one sided. There is no unity in Zimbabwe and no genuine efforts at nation building as happened in King Mzilikazi and Mambo's time. Its all pretence and sweeping things under the carpet. ZANU PF is a very vengeful party. Even your leader will never set differences aside to attend a funeral of an opponent. To date, he has not forgiven Ndabaningi Sithole - even in his grave!!

Kwakubus'uMambo no Mzilikazi - 15 June 2016

Tsvangirai is the only foot forward.coalition with Mujuru haibde kwakazara mazanu

CDE SOX - 16 June 2016

Coalition with Joyce is a non starter. Where was she when Zanus killed innocent MDC members? Lets not fool ourselves Tsvangirai is the only route.
