OJs edge Sportivo

HARARE - Old Johannians (OJs) maintained their fourth place on the Harare Rugby League standings with a 15-7 win over Harare Sports Club at Old Georgians Sports Club (OGs) on Saturday.

Three tries to one in favour of OJs was how it ended as the defending champions Harare Sports Club fell to their third defeat of the season in six games.

Despite the defeat, Sportivo moved a place up the log to second place after Old Hararians were docked five points for failing to fulfill their fixture against OGs at the same venue.

OGs, on a 100 percent winning record, are in pole position with 30 points while OH slid to third on 14 points and OJs are in fourth with 14 points as well.

The bottom team is Police Defenders in fifth on 10 points after a successful outing in Manicaland where they beat hosts Mutare Sports Club 25-17.

But in the main match of the day, HSC took a 7-5 lead at halftime with a try from eighthman Osbourne Muhamba which was converted by scrumhalf Itai Nyakambaza while the OJs responded through an unconverted try from Tristan Schutte.

The second half saw OJs scoring two more tries courtesy of Reese Surtees and Shawn Kenee.

OJs manager Roger Woodward said it was a huge feat to beat a top club like the Red Lions.

“To beat one of the top clubs in the country is a great achievement for OJs, especially considering we are just over a year old,” Woodward told the Daily News.

“It has taken a lot of hard work all around to get where we are but we are not fooled into thinking the job is done.

“We know a lot more will be required to defeat the in-form teams but it is the first big step we have taken in a long journey.”
