Zina appeals for funds

HARARE - Zimbabwe Netball Association (Zina) is appealing for funds to help them prepare for the Under-21 Africa Netball World Youth Qualifiers to be held in Botswana from July 23 to 30.

The World 2017 Youth Championships will also be held in Botswana later next year. In an interview with the Daily News, Zina president Letitia Chipandu said they are relying on well-wishers to fund the team’s preparations.

“We survive on donations from well-wishers.  We struggle to get our teams to participate in regional and continental assignments though we have never missed any,” Chipandu said.

“The association is run by elected volunteers who are fully employed elsewhere who only give their time when they can.”

Chipandu also appealed to the Sports ministry to come to Zina’s rescue.

“To date, we haven’t got financial assistance from the ministry except our Under-20 team for the Region V Games,” she said.

“I feel the ministry should spread its resources to all national associations even if it’s a small developmental funding than concentrates on one sport.”

Chipandu said they are planning to hold a training camp next month to get the team in shape before travelling to Botswana.

“The team had its first camp in April and the second camping will be in July,” she said.

“We are very hopeful of winning and qualifying for the 2017 World Tournament.

“We will also have the Under-20 Region V national team in camp at the same time.”
