Harare hosts Chibuku Neshamwari contest

HARARE - Harare will select its representative for the Chibuku Neshamwari Traditional Dance Festival finals at the provincial championships to be held today at Warren Park Bar.

The Chibuku Neshamwari Traditional Dance Festival, which is sponsored by Delta Beverages, is jointly organised by Zimbabwe National Traditional Dancers Association (ZNTDA) and National Arts Council of Zimbabwe.

According to ZNTDA finance and marketing officer Nyadzisai Mirisawu, 10 groups will compete for the ticket to represent Harare at the national finals to be held later in the year.

“The groups which will compete in the provincial finals include Maramuro Agure (Malawi nyau), Dedza Chitandidzo Gure (Malawi nyau), Gasani Moto (Zambia nyau), Landilani Amanyau (Zambia nyau), Pasichigare Dance (muchongoyo), A2 Chimtali, Kondanani Chimtali, Kubvana Chimtali, Nerwande Mbira and Madhonza Makuru (mbira).

“Shingai Dance Troupe, the winners of the provincial competition last year, will be the guest group,” said Mirisawu.

Winners of the event will walk away with $500, with second and third place pocketing $300 and $200 respectively.

National winners will pocket $4 000 while position two and three will earn $3 000 and $2 000 respectively.

The national champions last year were Mashonaland East’s Makarekare Traditional Dance Troop who beat nine other provincial champions at the national finals held in Bulawayo.

The 2014 national champions were Ngoma Dzepasi, another dance group from Mashonaland East.
