I will not persecute gays: Tsvangirai

BULAWAYO - Opposition MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai says he will not persecute gays if he assumes power in the forthcoming elections.

Briefing journalists at the Bulawayo Press Club on Friday, Tsvangirai said while he does not subscribe to homosexuality, he will not temper with their freedom as enshrined in the  Constitution.

“I will not stand to persecute gays. I know in our society gays are shunned upon and as far as I am concerned I am not gay, I don’t support gays. I only want to say that I will not prosecute or persecute gays because in the Constitution they are given that right,” Tsvangirai said.

“There is freedom of sexual orientation in the current Constitution of Zimbabwe. Why should that clause be violated?” he asked.

President Robert Mugabe is on record describing homosexuals as “worse than pigs and dogs”.

At one point, Mugabe took his fight against homosexuals to the United Nations summit and provoked anger among activists.

If you respect homosexuality then you dont have room in Zim politics.I used to support MDC-T but because of your position concerning homosexuals i will not waste my time supporting moral and spiritual decadence. To hell with Tsvangirai with your disgusting homosexuals, where you expecting funding.

TM THE GREAT - 1 May 2016

tsvangirayi will pander to the whims of gays just to get funding for his project of white appeasement

truth - 1 May 2016

Tsvangirai proved that he has no Zimbabweans at heart, but seeks to further foreign interests.God will never allow you to rule come hail come thunder.Thats why you always loose to Mugabe.

TM THE GREAT - 1 May 2016

@TM THE GREAT the gay issue is not about foreign funding anymore. I personally do not love or hate gays. I'm indifferent to them but I find them a lot better some heterosexuals who rape, sexually abuse and marry little girls - underage girls and destroy their future. There are other church sects that hide behind religion vachiti varoteswa naMwari kuti varoore those little girls some as young as 14. I sincerely you are not one of them. Go to any college right now. Those married sugar daddies waiting to abuse the innocent little girls, I bet you, are not gays. Thing some more before you 'cast the first stone' my brother.

Tozvireva - 1 May 2016

ooh goodness NO! there goes morgan! the issue of gays has no question & answer; its just not negotiable and has no place in zimbabwe; its a straight NO. there should not be a slight chance of debate on the issue of gays. its a taboo that must be flashed from the face of our kantry. the president (tsvangirayi of course) need to change his position on that and gays are not a people worth to stand for. we don't need them to achieve the zim we want.

SaManyika Chaiye - 1 May 2016

The Constitution gives gay people their rights, not Tsvangirai. Why should we pick and choose what we want and dont want from the Supreme Law. I'm not gay. I do not understand though why it should be illegal to be gay. It may be immoral, but morals are not the law. If you dont like gay people, just stay away from them and wont bother you. You cant just hate gay people for the sake of it, thats being a hypocrite of the highest order. You cant then judge war vets and violent pro ZANU youths for hating "sell outs" and opposition supporters who exercise their rights. We have serious issues to be concerned about than two consenting adult males or females sleeping with each other, its none of our business. Some use the bible and Christianity to argue that homosexuality should not be allowed, yet not everyone is a Christian. The Constitution gives us freedom of worship and by default that also means freedom not to worship. Some argue its immoral and against our culture. Yet sex before marriage and many other habits are immoral, how come those too are not illegal. It is just baseless to say being gay is an unlawful act. I am not gay. We may not like or support gays but granting someones sexually preference as illegal is just shallow.

attiza - 1 May 2016

@attiza,there is something called a red line

truth - 1 May 2016

Congratulations and thank you Tsvangirai. Now you are speaking like a leader.

david taylor - 1 May 2016

@truth; there is something called a Constitution, in Zimbabwe it gives gay people their rights and Tsvangirai is simply I saying i do not support gays but who am I to disrespect the Constitution. Lets respect the Constitution in its entirety, lest we be found wanting by those we accuse of disrespecting it. If you insist on a red line, please tell me the basis of your red line. Please also do not refer to the bible or morals. We cannot have a red line meant to promote hate and discrimination merely because you're disgusted by the thought of a man sleeping with another man.

attwellm - 1 May 2016

@truth, what is your red line that is not to be crossed. People should not choose sections of the law to adhere and respect because where you this sexual freedom is not a worthy law, another will think that freedom of speech is not a law to adhere to and another will pick statutory rape as a law not to adhere to because their moral compass allows it. Iko kungo venga vanhu for something that they were born with is not right. Noone is saying like it, or partake in it, we are saying respect the law of the land and leave those that do not agree with you to themselves. Kana vasingatauri newe and vesinganetsa newe famba yako nzira

B Moyo - 2 May 2016

@B moyo&@ attwellin,i have the copy of the constitution, kindly advise me where i can find the clause that allows a man to sleep with another man,i keenly await yo answer

truth - 2 May 2016

This creature called democracy has always been anti-biblical principles, thats why in the past and with very few cases presently(Gulf States) there were absolute monarchs where biblical decrees were enforced. Unfortunately for us believers, Tsvangirai is right on this one..

jacktheswede - 2 May 2016

Thats what I always say that, Morgiza is sucha perrenial Teaboy Politician:- Zero Initiative, Zero Principles. There's nothing he says that really comes from that big empty head of his. Go now in the streets of Harare or Bulawayo, and make a survey of 100people and you are guaranteed that 99,9% of the people will condemn homosexuality with absolute rejection and impunity. Then you have the Morgiza says such sh#t? To hell with it, this toad!

chunga - 2 May 2016

Every nation has a right to choose what is right and wrong for its people. Zimbabweans have chosen to reject gays because we do not believe it is progressive for our society. Have a look at those Western states that promote homosexuality, they have rejected polygamy, as an example, yet it can also be argued that it can be between three (or more) consenting adults. Why? Because they believe it runs counter to what they believe in... The same can be applied to these so-called homosexual human rights by other states and we have rightly rejected them with the contempt that they deserve!

Greyhora - 2 May 2016

@Greyhora. You aptly put it, they have rejected it but its not BANNED. What Mogiza is saying is "I reject it but cannot ban it" If the constitution says free sexual orientation who is Mogiza or Mugabe to ban it. Morals cannot be interpreted as law.

chaizvo izvo - 3 May 2016

The constitution does not outlaw homosexuality, what's not allowed is gay marriages, same applies to South Africa. Some claim to have copies of the constitution but do not understand it. Your opinion and Mugabes opinion and that of people on the street is not the Constitution. You cannot expect someone to be on record sayin they will disrespect the constitution just to please you.

attiza - 3 May 2016

I feel sorry for Mr. Tsvangirayi. Sir, you have just lost votes on this issue. This issue can make you suffer an outright defeat against Mugabe, and you have just done so in advance.

Amend the constitution for the the good of Zimbabweans. God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, this is what he hates most- homosexuality, lesbianism, he created man in his own image, after Adam he created Eve, a woman so that they could live in paradise. Gay rights is provoking the almighty, that is bringing a curse upon our country for money.. Lets not lose our moral values for fame. Who wants a gay society, for example man divorces wife for another man, and suppose has custody of children, how do these children address this gay munhu, as amai - go to hell for the endless fire.

This is one contentious subject.. I do not support homosexuality , but ......wait there is a but ... Persecuting them is another issue. Id rather this situation was not there but these things zvinonetsa. Consider the case of hermaphrodites/ intersex . People born with both male and female organs what do we say about them. Would it be considered criminal if such a person turns out to be homo ?? i dont know . There is a case in Bulawayo were the parents of a newborn were asked to chose the sex of their baby because the baby had both organs. They chose to raise the baby as a boy but it later turned out that he was more of a girl. This just proves that sometimes nature doesn't always work the way we expect.Should we persecute this child ? Cases of such are many and have been there since way back . We say this is a western thing but we have venecular names for them. As for me I don't know anything but i think Morgan has a point lets not promote it but lets not persecute them.
