Building of the new Parly not a priority

EDITOR — The plan by the Zanu PF government for a new Parliament Building in Mt Hampden, some 14km from Harare’s CBD, which is expected to start this year  at a cost of $146 million is a case of misplaced priorities.

Surely, do we really need it?

Zimbabweans, do we need a new Parliament building while our roads are claiming lives almost every day? Do we really need new Parliament offices while hunger is the order of the day? Zimbabweans, do we really need a new Parliament while some of our sons and daughters, sisters and brothers are getting their education under a tree, which does not have leaves and no shade? Our fathers and mothers, uncles and aunts are struggling to get food, even the  lowly−paid in our midst.

The country’s unemployment rate is on the rise, do we really need a new Parliament building at the cost of $146 million?

Our beloved government, we understand you cannot help all at the same time but you can help or make a major difference to most citizens on all the above problems. Look at what the $146 million earmarked for the building can change.

When the country receives important guests from other nations why do they keep them in the centre of the capital city? Why do they not take them to places like Mbare, Epworth etc?

The answer is simply that the government would not do that because they do not want outsiders to see how people are suffering in those settlements.

There is more at stake than a parliamentary office block. That $146 million can change a lot and the building can wait. Let’s all benefit from our nation.

New parliament building yet there isn't any functional parliament? This is so ridiculous!
