Marange stars for Zim ladies

HARARE - Opender Precious Marange scored an impressive half-century before grabbing a wicket to guide Zimbabwe to the ICC Twenty20 Global Qualifiers with a 68-run win over Kenya here yesterday.

The left-hander was at her usual best hitting four boundaries and seven maximums on her way to 71 runs from 56 balls before she was bowled out by Daisy Njogore in the 15th over.

Sharne Mayers weighed in with 29 runs from 22 balls batting at number four while Ashley Ndiraya (11) and Modester Mupachikwa (10) made sure that the hosts post a commanding total of 141 runs for the loss of six wickets.

In reply, Kenya laboured to 73 runs all out inside 19,5 overs as Zimbabwe who opened the day on 12 points from four matches extended their lead to nine points with only a game to play.

The match against Uganda at CFX Country Club was reduced to a dead rubber as Zimbabwe booked the only slot for the global qualifiers on a 100 percent winning record.

Zimbabwe Cricket spokesperson Darlington Majonga said the girls did the nation proud by qualifying for the next stage making home conditions count.

“Their achievement has come as a great delight to all of us at Zimbabwe Cricket and, no doubt, to the entire nation as well,” Majonga told the Daily News yesterday.

“Their hard work and commitment has paid off. On the evidence of their superb performances in this tournament, they definitely have what it takes to make it to the next ICC Women’s World Twenty20 finals in the West Indies.”
