Karate team returns

HARARE - The Zimbabwe Karate Union (ZKU) team was greeted by a sizeable and appreciative crowd at Harare International Airport upon their return from the All Japan tournament in Shizuoka City yesterday.

Admire Chingozhoro won a silver medal in the heavyweight category at the tournament while Sensei Samson Muripo settled sixth place.

Shadreck Chigombe and Kelly Mtisi did not disappoint despite missing out on the podium.

“We are grateful to the people gathered around to welcome us. It’s always a great feeling to know that there are people out there who appreciate the role we are playing in our efforts to put the country on the world map,” Muripo told the Daily News yesterday.

“Today (yesterday) we wine and dine with our stakeholders, friends and relatives but the celebrations only last this far as we shift our focus towards our next international assignment scheduled for Japan in October.”

Chingozhoro was happy with his performance and that of the entire team.

“Winning is becoming a routine for me and this time it was a bit different from the first victory in Iran where I pinched myself upon landing at the Harare Airport because I couldn’t believe that indeed I had conquered the world,” he said.

“We always fall short in our preparations due to lack of resources but I would like to give credit to our association for doing their best given the environment we are operating in and most importantly, the fighters themselves for their never say die attitude.

“It is my hope that our performances on the international arena have spoken enough volume for the potential sponsors to come on board and partners us for a worthy cause.”
