'$15 billion' play at Theatre in the Park tonight

HARARE - Protest actor Sylvanos Mudzvova will take his one-man play titled Missing Diamonds: I Want My Share to Theatre in the Park this evening.

Mudzvova was briefly arrested last week just six minutes into the performance of the political satire outside Parliament.

The arrest disrupted the feisty actor’s plans to take the same play to the Chinese Embassy in Harare.

Rooftop Promotions, the organisation that runs Theatre in the Park, confirmed Mudzvova’s once-off performance of the contentious satire through their publicist Robert Tapfumaneyi.

“Mudzvova will stage a once-off act tonight from 5:30pm and the one-man play is expected to last for half-an-hour,” said Tapfumaneyi.

In a recent interview with the Daily News, Mudzvova insisted that he would continue with plans to take the one-man play to the Chinese Embassy.

“I still have to fulfil my mission. I will continue my plan to take my play to the Chinese Embassy as I want them to explain what happened to the missing $15 billion as they are the ones who were mining in Chiadzwa. I strongly believe that theatre is not an offence in this country,” he said.

Mudzvova also claimed that last week he was warned that he would “disappear” like fellow one-man demonstrator and pro-democracy activist Itai Dzamara if he insisted on carrying on with the play.

The award-winning actor has been arrested on a number of occasions in the country for his involvement in controversial protest plays and political satires.

In 2007, he and Tongani Anthony Tongani were arrested at the premiere of the controversial satire titled The Final Push. “The play, which was written by Mudzvova, is about the chairman of a building called Liberty House (Mugabe) and his political challenger (presumed to be opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai) who were trapped together in an elevator during a power failure.

The police also once arrested Mudzova for intending to march on Parliament to demand that members of the legislature and other elected officials be legally obligated to declare their assets before taking office.

Five years ago the irrepressible Mudzvova was among the Rituals outreach team that was arrested and detained in Manicaland.
