Zim protesters threaten to shut down embassy in SA

JOHANNESBURG - Officials at the Zimbabwe’s embassy in Pretoria were taken to task yesterday by protesting members of a new party, Zimbabwe People First (ZPF), which was recently formed by sacked deputy president of that country, Joice Mujuru.

The protesters were demanding the right to vote in Zimbabwe polls from South Africa, where they reside.

Insults were hurled at the embassy’s minister counsellor, Simon Chisorochengwe, who came out to receive the protesters memorandum. He was closely guarded by members of the South African Police Service.

The protesters, wearing white ZPF T-shirts, became agitated when Chisorochengwe told them that Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to South Africa Isaac Moyo was not available.

The protesters then asked Chisorochengwe to explain what his title “minister counsellor” means.

Chisorochengwe told retorted: “Take time to read the Vienna Convention.”

His remarks drew and angry response.

“This is not Vienna, you old man. We don’t read Vienna Conventions, which do not help us. Just tell us what is your job in there,” shouted one protester, who only identified himself as Thomas.

Interim convener of the party in South Africa Lawrence Mavhaire weighed in: “This is the problem with our Zimbabwean government. We are asking you to introduce yourself and you tell us about Vienna. How is that going to help us?”

As the shouting intensified Chisorochengwe retreated into the safety of high security gates of the embassy. “We will shut this embassy,” shouted a protester.

Before long the protesters started chanting “Chisoro must fall”.

When Chisorochengwe eventually returned to the high security gates, Mavhaire said he would only hand him the memorandum if he came outside the secure enclosure. He later handed the memorandum over.

Mujuru was booted from both Zanu PF party and the Zimbabwe government in December 2014 at the sixth Zanu PF congress. She was sacked after a spirited attack by First Lady Grace Mugabe during her Meet the People Tour rallies who alleged Mujuru was planning to assassinate Mugabe.

After keeping Zimbabweans guessing over her next move, she went on to launch the ZPF movement with other former Zanu PF heavyweights who had been ousted. Mujuru has said her ZPF party would give the vote to millions of Zimbabweans based outside the country.

She also said her party would repeal the controversial Public Order and Security Act, realign the Criminal Code Codification and Reform Act, ensure the Electoral Act would fully comply with the county’s constitutional provisions and requirements.

Mujuru said the party would respect property rights through addressing historical compulsory acquisition by way of compensation. — IOL

@truth; I always say, the idiocy that anyone display to me is equal to the amount on insult I throw back at them! @jojo 1st said diibu was my something, then diibu responded and said @jojo was vhiora's hussy; its @jojo who started and I didn't want to be part of that feud though my name was said! I couldn't take offence from @jojo because I agree to diibu's sentiments in principle. however the comment above is aimless even if it was anyone I agree to, I will still have said so! our society allows us to differ in opinion but never should we allow a sqr inch of profane language to be lampooned without valid cause! all zanu appointed ambassadors, wherever they are posted, are representing a clique of the ruling elite and not the interests of the country. ndatenda!

zpf must get this pressure from just 4 of theembassies where most Zims are ie RSA, UK, Zanbia abd Botswna. These diasporans MUST have a right to vote. The noise must be made and heard now and not in 2018. Chisoro, in the absence of the ambassador, you should have dealt with this.We need a French Revolution-like uprising in Zim. Grace is no different from Mary ANTOINETTE. FIRST LADIES whostart fire and run away when it gets hot. I hear she ran away under the pretext that she was to accompany Bona who went to Malaysia to deliver a baby. Over $300 000 of State funds wasted because Bona wants to deliver a baby in the contry she went to school. This family has condemned the STATE and private hospitals in Zimbabwe and they look down upon the local midwives. Is Grace and Robert withus as we suffer in Zimbabwe. Ma war vets ndidzo nyaya dzekutaura idzi. They bought a house in Malaysiawhen Zimbabwe was at the height of exchange controls, nothing was said. Kuruneri suffered for building a house outside contrary to echange control regulations.

kantries like RSA & Uk are not worried about zim issues because they have their own sewer bursts to clean. neva expect a Briton to come and pick lita in zim let alone solving our grassroots problems! if these kantriz wanted change in zim they would simply deport every zimbo and dump them here, rhobhati will go overnight becoz of the noise that will ensue. the diasporans expect us to remove rhobhati while they pretend to be in exile yet they are seeking jobs there. they must come here if they really want to vote because neva will rhobhati send ballots there. come home and face the bullfrogs on home turf.
