Zim karatekas off to Japan

HARARE - Zimbabwe karatekas are today set to leave for the 47th All Japan Karate tournament in Shizuoka City.

A four-member team comprising winner of the first international Kyokushinkaikan tourney in Tokyo, Japan in 2009 and fourth place finisher in last year’s All Japan competition Sensei Samson Muripo.

The other fighters in the squad are gold medallist in the international Open Weight 2nd Sokyokushin tournament in Iran last August Sensei Admire Chingozhoro, Shadreck Chigombe and Kelly Mtisi.

The All Japan Karate tournament is set to run for two days on April 16 and 17.

Muripo is confident the Zimbabwe delegation will put in good performance than last year when they failed to leave a lasting impression at the same competition last year.

“The event is the first international outing heralding the biggest showcase in October at the same venue so we are taking this tournament seriously to gauge our performance ahead of the October show,” Muripo told the Daily News yesterday.

Last year, the team travelled to Japan via South Africa at the height of the Xenophobia attacks but were safe from the violence that characterised our neighbours on foreign nationals.
