Zim gears up for Youth Games

HARARE - Zimbabwe's preparations for this year’s edition of the African Union Sports Council Region 5 Under-20 Youth Games have gathered momentum.

The Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) has already entered the team to the organisers of the Games in Luanda, Angola.

The sporting festival, which is a brain child of the African Union Sports Council Region 5, was inaugurated in 2004 in Maputo, Mozambique. Zimbabwe has participated in all the editions of the biennial Games.

“In all the editions of the Games that we have participated in we have always come second out of the 10 Southern African countries except in 2012 where we came eight, this was to do with the size of the team delegation that we had in Lusaka,” SRC spokesperson Tirivashe Nheweyembwa said.

“The team comprised 53 athletes and officials. This implied that we were highly depleted in most of the sporting disciplines especially the individual sports where most of the medals potentially come from.

“We however, managed to recover in 2014 when Zimbabwe hosted the 6th edition of the Games in Bulawayo and we came a credible second out of 10 teams with teams such as netball winning a gold medal, athletics was the flagship of the team, they won 12 gold medals out of the 18 gold medals which Zimbabwe won.”

In Angola, Zimbabwe will participate in athletics, athletics for the visually-impaired, basketball, boxing, judo, gymnastics, netball, swimming and tennis.
