Rain washes out Macheso gig

HARARE - Sungura ace Alick Macheso cancelled a gig that was scheduled to take place at Moonlight Bar in Mabvuku, Harare on Friday night due to “excessive rainy conditions.”

Macheso told the Daily News that the rains and chilly conditions that have engulfed Harare over the past few days forced him to call off the gig.

“We had no option but to cancel the show due to bad weather. We were supposed to perform on an open space but because of the drizzle and cold weather it was not possible to fulfil the show,” said Macheso.

A day earlier, Macheso’s gig at the Private Lounge, where he celebrated the success of his latest album Tsoka Dzerwendo (Ayayaa), failed to attract a big crowd mainly due to the rainy and chilly conditions.

Despite the uncharacteristically small crowd, the sungura music star, who shared guitarist/vocalist Progress Chipfumo and feisty dancer Beverly Sibanda, delivered a polished act.

Macheso performed hits off his latest album that included Baba, Gungwa, Munyaradzi, Mude and Kurarama Inyasha.

Elsewhere, the gig to mark the 20th anniversary since the death of music legend Leonard Dembo that took place at Dandaro Inn in the Harare Showgrounds also attracted a poor crowd thanks to the unfriendly weather.

In the run-up to the commemorative gig, organisers had announced that music superstar Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi and Macheso would grace the occasion but the two and several other high-profile artistes did not turn up.

The Dandaro Inn gig was the launch of several Leonard Dembo Commemorative gigs that will take place at various venues this month.
