HARARE - Zimbabwe won a gold and a bronze medal at the ATU Triathlon Africa Championships held in Bloemfontein, South Africa over the weekend.
Brett Elliot from Peterhouse clinched gold in the youth men super sprint category while Andoni Mutzuris of Hellenic Academy settled for bronze in the same race.
Top junior woman triathlete Gabrielle de Chassart agonisingly missed out on a podium finish as she completed her race in fourth place in the 18-19 age group.
The trend was however, not only peculiar to de Chassart alone but extended to girls’ 12-13 age group where Erica Elliot finished in fourth as did Luke Steffens in the boys’ 12-13 age category.
The championships came hard on the heels of the national championships that ran concurrently with the Schweppes Water Troutbeck ATU Triathlon African Cup in Nyanga last month.
Triathlon Zimbabwe (TZ) was pleased with the team’s overall performance in Bloemfontein.
“We extend our sincere thanks to all those who supported our team prior to their departures as well as to tour manager Tammy Benade and coach Pam Fulton for all their hard work in the lead up to the tour and for looking after the kids (sic) so well,” TZ said in a statement.
“Overall, our team did exceptionally well and every athlete gave of their very best.”
