Sulu speaks on city council charges

BULAWAYO - Dendera exponent Suluman Chimbetu has expressed concern over the exorbitant venue charges by the Bulawayo City Council, a development he said had a negative impact on the showbiz industry.

Speaking on the side-lines of a Gloria Tour at the Large City Hall Car Park last weekend where he shared the stage with Jah Prayzah, Sebastian Magacha, Shinsoman, Jeys Marabini and Selmor Mtukudzi, Suluman said the venues were not affordable for an ordinary artist.

While City officials could not give us exact figures, it costs about $2 800 to hire Large City Hall for an all-night show plus a deposit of $2 800 while Amphitheater costs $600 per session and over $1 000 for an all-night gig.

“I really love to come and perform in Bulawayo as many times as possible but the problem is the venues are too expensive,” he said.

“There are too many good venues for shows in Bulawayo but they are too expensive for artists. The rates being charged by the council are beyond the reach of many artists.”

The Sean Timba singer appealed to the local authorities, on behalf of other artists, to help promote arts by charging friendly rates that can “make us get something at the end of the day”.

“We are struggling as musicians and we make a living out of music hence we are asking the authorities to hear our plea as artists. We provide the much-needed entertainment for the people but at the end of the day we don’t get anything.

“I believe the facilities are for the people to use and at least pay something that make artists pocket something for their hard work,” he said.
