I was close to Sam, says Suluman

HARARE - As Friday approaches, musicians and the Mtukudzi family are geared up for the Sam Mtukudzi commemorations to be held at Pakare Paye Arts Centre in Norton.

Sam died in a car accident in March 2010 together with his best friend and sound engineer, Owen Chimhare.

Suluman “Sulu” Chimbetu said he was glad to be included on the line-up as someone who worked with the late Sam.

“People should expect the usual dendera sound as we honour the late. I worked very well with Sam and I was nurturing him. We even held some shows with him. He was also in the same band with my sister, Saiwe (AY Band).

“During the time we were working together, he told me that he wanted Saiwe who was in Botswana at that time to work with him. I went to Botswana to collect her and she became part of the band,” said Sulu.

Other musicians on the line-up include Jah Prayzah, Prince Edward band and others.

Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi’s manager Sam Mataure said it was all about remembering the lives of Sam and Owen.

“We are certainly ready for Friday but you know with planning you can never feel that you have done enough. But we expect it to be a fantastic Friday to remember Sam and Owen.

“It is not just about artistes playing music and entertaining people, but remembering the lives of Sam and his best friend. Owen’s family will also be there.

“There are a lot of artistes performing but most importantly the focus will be on Gary Tight as he will be playing Sam’s songs. Tuku chose him because he is a close family friend and he is a talented and brilliant young man. He chose it to be the most important part of the night of the commemorations,” Mataure said.

Where were you? Sulumani then was established and Jah Prayzah was even backing him. You are the motormouth whojust shouts at anyone asina kukutuka. Nxaaa
