Mujuru's ZPF rolls out rallies to pressure Mugabe

HARARE - Zimbabwe People First (ZPF) said yesterday it has started staging rallies to pile pressure on President Robert Mugabe and his beleaguered Zanu PF party ahead of the 2018 vote.

Joice Mujuru, who was Mugabe’s deputy for 10 years and touted as a likely heir until she got fired in 2014 on untested allegations of plotting a putsch, said in her first remarks in the wake of the launch of her ZPF launch last week that Zimbabweans were hungry for change, and promised to address unemployment and to amend the governing Zanu PF’s controversial black economic empowerment laws, which critics say have spooked foreign investors.

ZPF spokesperson Rugare Gumbo said since publicly announcing that she will be leading the opposition party, there has been a groundswell of support even from people still sitting in the Zanu PF political bureau (politburo).

“It is an active period for us and the president has been meeting people who are coming to her home enquiring about the party,” Gumbo said.

“We have been doing rallies in the provinces and in Harare; it is a hive of political activity having held rallies in Mabvuku/Tafara at the weekend.”

Tomorrow, ZPF will hold yet another rally at Glen View 3 Shopping Centre in Harare while in Mashonaland East, all roads lead to Marondera where the party’s provincial leadership will hold a meeting with supporters.

A series of rallies have been lined up in Masvingo, Manicaland and Matabeleland regions.

Asked if Mujuru will attend any of the rallies, Gumbo said “presently people are mobilising”.

“We have not yet set a date for the president’s star rally but she is definitely going to be there on the ground and meet the people because they are now expecting her,” he said.

Apart from rallies, Mujuru is also secretly holding talks with senior Zanu PF bigwigs.

In a development that has shaken the ruling party to its very foundations, Mujuru is said to be in contact with several legislators who are plotting to spring a surprise for Mugabe. She recently hosted two Zanu PF politburo members.

Among the high-profile fingers that were suspended from Zanu PF — not expelled — and are now working with Mujuru are former deputy Energy minister Munacho Mutezo and several legislators.

“Mutezo has since come out in the open and we are currently working together.

“The president (Mujuru) recently hosted two politburo members whose names we cannot divulge at present. They indicated their willingness to join us and it is now a question of when and not if they will join,” Gumbo said.

Mutezo flatly refused to comment on the issue.

While Mutezo refused to speak to the Daily News on his new political home, a picture posted by ZPF supporters on Facebook shows the Chimanimani West MP seated on the front row with former ZBC board member Finance Elliot Kasu.

Efforts to get a comment from Zanu PF spokesperson Simon Khaya Moyo were unsuccessful yesterday, but the governing party has derisively dismissed the new political party as  a “damp squib.”

This is notwithstanding the fact that Mugabe’s party—at war with itself owing to succession fights—has been frantically trying to woo back into the party disgruntled officials, including  Chikomba Central MP Felix Mhona , his Maramba Pfungwe and Murehwa North counterparts Washington Musvaire and Tenda Makunde respectively, who are all linked to the Mujuru-led outfit.

Other governing party officials who have officially joined hands with Mujuru to take Mugabe head on in the eagerly-awaited 2018 elections include former deputy Information minister, Bright Matonga who is in the ZPF information department.

Meanwhile, it is a hectic period for Mujuru with party supporters swarming her Harare home as the widow of the late liberation war icon, General Solomon Mujuru, begins her baby steps in the quest to end Zanu PF 36 year old rule.

So far, Mujuru’s political outfit has dispatched emissaries nationwide as they seek to take advantage of the simmering wars in Zanu PF to poach more officials ahead of the 2018 elections.

“We launched our party here last week because it is the capital but soon the president shall be going to every corner of the country to reach out to the people who are impatiently waiting for her. They are also rallies that have been lined up and these are because people are just excited,” Gumbo said.

Whatever they come up with, these guys are still ZANU! Even B Matonga is in there. Therefore my brothers and sisters, lets not get hoodwinked again. Remember GNU and all that "for the good of the country nonsense?"

Dunlop, are the former Zanu pf people not allowed to join ZPF. Is there safety in zanu at the moment? Surely even the most senior is likely to be thinking of a new home. And besides if you say they must not recruit from zanu, are you suggesting that they must get from MDCs? I think as long as they join opposition ranks then we must give them our support. Opposition is not a preserve of a particular section of society.

Gari waDonono - 11 March 2016

We were conned by Tsvangirai now Mujuru thinks she can pull off the same trick? Just think back and analyze Mujuru's track record as a member of ZANU PF. Did she object to Gukukarhundi or the stolen elections, the racially motivated eviction of white farmers or even make any serious noise about the murder of her former husband? Like Tsvangirai she is a total fraud, someone who has zero loyalties towards anyone or anything other than herself. People who have done nothing more than carrying placards denouncing Bob have ended up inside yet she is accused of plotting to overthrow the President, conniving with foreign agents from the US Embassy and massive corruption? Yet in spite of all these serious allegations made against her and even her standing now as main opposition, absolutely nothing has happened to her. All of us by now know that any serious challenge to Bob is eliminated? I ASK ALL OF YOU OUT THERE TO WAKE UP.

Guys, politics is a game of numbers. If MDC remains dormant it will get a very rude awakening in the forthcoming election.Hakuna politician ane vanhu vake permanently; you continuously try and persuade the electorate otherwise unozviruza. Those writing off mai Mujuru are doing it at their own peril.

CHINJA JOYCE CHINJA MAITIRO...We in MDC saw that 16 years ago, now some former ZANU PF dude thinks she has the authority to tell us that Mugabe is a dictator. It it takes her 35 years to see how bad ZANU policies and dictatorship is I am sorry ..but God forgive us.. Joyce does not deserve to be a leader lest she leads us into darkness, it takes her quite a bit to see what is good or bad. VIVA MDC-T chete

Chimbga - 11 March 2016

Is this PF not Mugabe's plan? Mugabe is rejuvenating Zanu Pf through PF. He will fire most senior members in the current zanu pf and they will all join PF thus a Zanu PF with a new name. in the mean time he will create conditions that the current Zanu pf is completely dead.

cremorairipi - 11 March 2016

There is need to look at matters with a mature eye. Joice Mujuru finds something wrong with ZANU only after she is discarded from it, just as Mutasa and the rest of the powerful ZANU figures do. What does it mean? What if they still had been inside ZANU like Khaya Moyo and Chombo. It is obvious that the remaining powerful figures would also join ZPF if they found themselves on the wrong side of Grace, any day. We need to wake up and look at issues with sober minds. Tsvangirai might have been a son of ZANU at some point, just like many of us but we all saw ZANU's uncaring, murderous, parasitic and spiteful ways and wished we did not vote for it, in 1980, thus we embraced the idea of voting it out until it went to get re-organised, so we welcomed Tsvangirayi as a credible alternative to evil Mugabe. Tsvangirai remains untested despite the GNU and why should we not give him the chance to show us what he is capable of doing? He is very likely to perform very well in order to show how different he is from Mugabe.

Misitadete - 11 March 2016

Vakomana vese varikuti mai Mujuru ndevamugabe you are failing to use common sense. Do you think vakafara pakafa General Rex. Imika musatamba nezvakadai. Joyce saw a need for change from inside and even the husband had seen that. This is why he was killed. Now if someone is fired from a party ask why was she fired. Simply because ideology dzanga dzatosiyana and that is what we call opposition whether from within or out. Truly speaking ZPF is a brand of the moment. Kana uchida iwe usingabvumirani neni go round rural Zimbabwe. Mucharohwa nezveusiku makagara mumaoffice vamwe vari busy kushanda. I tell you people will not be ferried by ZUPCO but will pay their way to listen to Real Change. Ma shamwari angu eMaMDC ese acknowledge this fast geowing baby and see how you can wrk together.

mujuruchete - 11 March 2016

I find it very interesting that PF says it welcomes all comrades willing to leave Zanu PF for PF. So in the end PF will be Zanu PF with a new name. if we change the set but remain with the same actors like Mpofu; Chombo; Jim Kunaka i wonder whether we will have real change. Is Mugabe so senile that he now let all his old guard out and join PF. so is he seeing the future of the current zanu pf with all people joining PF

cremora iripi - 11 March 2016

Prior to Mujuru's PF, no country in Africa had had as many political parties as our Zim. Now we got this pf to add to the melting pot of Zim political discourse. Meaning? Zimbos are a fickle lot. Anyone remember, Makoni, Mutambara, Ncube, Dabengwa, Biti ...? They want their cake to eat today whilst sat on their backsides drinking maScuds or whatever, that's the Zimbo fot you. Leader of the the opposition was manhandled by the police and beaten up. Not a word from the Zimbo. Dzamara is long gone and forgotten.Elections were stolen, quite blatantly in 2013, not so much as a squeak from the Zimbo in protest. Looting is exposed on a massive scale in 2014 and the Zimbo says, "so what"? Now Mujuru comes along, after a long running battle with disGrace and she wants out. Not soon after her husband's death, mind but after losing out to the famous bitch. Anyone with neurons has to ask themselves, do they feel lucky with ZPF?

Dunlop Munjanja - 11 March 2016

Dydmus Mutasa ,a forma CIO boss must 1st explain whr Dzamara is.then I can listen to him.He knew who took Jestina Mukoko n to this day he wont can a yone trust such a viper? He is stil fighting in courts to be readmited in zanu.Mai Mujuru knew where mukoko was. This is a puzzle they cn explain.

How foolish was she now that all these people know about it its a Plus to People First. In Chimanimani west it gets even better for People First coz ZANU wants to impose mai Undenge and everyone is only seing light in ZPF. I also met some government workers in Mutare and many are longing to get information on how to contribute in some way to ZPF. Ini ndiri kutaura zviri pa ground. Bvunzai youth leadership yeManicaland they are being embarrased everywhere were they go causing more harm to ZANU. To our MDC-T brothers let me advise you to research. So far your name is not being discussed any most places that Ihave gone. Either people are excited about ZPF or they are talking ZANU. BE VERY VERY CAREFUL YOU COULD TURN OUT TO BE IRRELEVANT SURELY.

makarasika - 12 March 2016

the reason why Zimbabwe is this situation is because an average Zimbabwean doesn't want the truth. below are some of the truths that people routinely circumvent: 1. rwavhi gukurahundi Mugabe committed genocide in Zimbabwe mainly the gukurahundi atrocities of the 1980s. this is the reason why he doesn't want to vacate the throne because he knows that he will be arrested. this has nothing to do with his marriage to grace is this come well after he had committed the crimes. 2. grace is a useless slut who left her marriage to get married to rwavhi because of pecuniary gains. 3. joice mujuru was the main driver of corruption in zanu with her late hubby rex. she owns a number of farms, mine and buildings around the country. she has no positive contribution to make to the country given her horrendous performance in govt for the past 35 years. she is a liar who wants us to believe that she always had differences with Mugabe yet she begged him to stay on the eve of her official cashiering. the fact that on top of her priorities is the chasing of solo's killers shows that she is in it for her own benefit and not for national benefit. tsvangirayi lost his wife in dodgy circumstances but never has he said that he wants to avenge that. also, joice consistently said that she has no ambition to become president now she is lying that people requested her to be president. the day we learnt to accept and tell the truth, our country and ourselves shall be liberated!!!

josphat mugadzaweta - 12 March 2016

@JOSPHAT you also have your own problems. 1. I don't think you are a Zimbabwean. 2. You lack understanding of revolutions. 3. You also have personal interests to protect since you believe in only one change. 4. You lack knowledge of the history of Zimbabwe. Let me say that for a start the majority of Zimbabweans were at one point ZANU PF including myself and possibly yourself thatbis if you arw a Zimba. Even Morgan comes from a very strong ZANU PF background. Ndivo maZANU PF dzinza chaiwo and when he was elected to represent the wokers zvanga zvine ZANU PF mukati. But in that conscience caught up with him when Ideology differed. Hence the formation of the movement. So there is no difference here with Joyce. Kana pfungwa dzaJoyce dzichipindirana nedza Mugabe then there is no point of the later firing the former. The fact that she was fired is good enough to prove that she has somethig different from Mugabe. Ini ndakambogara naMai Mujuru paDotito muna 2008 when vote counting was in progres. I had more that 30 min Chat with her and that is when I saw her other side. Indeed she wished everybody well including the opposition. She does not boast. What a humble woman. She even shook the hand of an independent Candidate who aparently scored the highest votes by independent Candidates in the country in Mt Darwin East (more than 5000 votes). I think Dr Amai Mujuru recalls. She called for unity and indeed there was. Again there is no one who is perfect incliding iwewe Josphat. Tikakudonongodza izvozvi une twunyaya twako twunoenderana nelevel yauri. What we want as Zimbas is change and as for now it only seems Mai Mujuru is the real choice. Morgan is a good guy and to me I honestly love him as someone who set the tone for change. But even he can see that the steam is gone. He has lost love from the majority of his lieutenants and failed to unite them.

joyce chete - 13 March 2016

@joyce chete. ndimi maland baron who intend to benefit through installing a corrupt joyce into power. why can't you reveal your name like I did? why should it take 35 years and firing for someone to realise that Mugabe is bad?

josphat mugadzaweta - 14 March 2016

Dunlop ngaaregedze kunyepera vanhu. You are a CIO. Stop lying to the people. ZPF is a genuine party and we will support them. 2013 ZanuPF rigged the elections and as a result Mugabe looted $15bn out. This time around we will not listen to any of your lies. Pasi ne ZANU, Pasi naMugabe. Viva Mai Mujuru!

TyreStop - 14 March 2016

People First is the new zanu Pf, many will be fired in Zanu PF and will join ZPF what a strategy by Matibili, G-40 will hang on to the skeleton Zanu-pf

Critical Ally - 14 March 2016

You said it TyreStop, ZANU pf rigged and looted on a massive scale and Mai Mujuru was part of that, plus more.

Dunlop Munjanja - 14 March 2016

In the end Mnagwagwa will eventually leave Zanu PF and towards 2018 elections he will join PF as vice to Mujuru or something this will complete the plan for the formation of a new Zanu PF. Is this not the reason why the elections rules are slowly being revised. No one will complain. this is a better plan for Mugabe because it rekindle the party and gives it new life and no one is disgruntled because someone was handpicked or the chaos that can come with the processes to have primaries and congress for successor.

cremora iripi - 14 March 2016

Ndinowirirana nadunlop naWashington. Zimbabweans need to be politically mature. The harsh reality is ZPF is a party of ZANU PF retrenchees - same deadwood being recycled. 35 years varimo mudariro kwava kuchinja uniform chete! Mucharova dzimwe 35 years neZPF kuti mupepuke
