Cop up for insulting Mugabe, First Lady

HARARE - A cop attached to Police Reaction Group at has been charged with insulting President Robert Mugabe and his wife.

Thompson Joseph Mloyi, 44, of Tomlison Depot, allegedly shouted: “President Robert Mugabe is too old to rule and had married a prostitute Grace Mugabe.”

Mloyi appeared before magistrate Elijah Makomo on Monday charged with undermining the authority of or insulting the president.

He was remanded out of custody to March 15, on $100 bail.

Prosecutor Fransisca Mukumbiri had urged the court not to grant him bail because he had committed a very serious offence.

“There is overwhelming evidence against the accused as he insulted the president in the presence of his workmates. He is a police officer who has knowledge and should abide by the law,” Mukumbiri said.

“The State witnesses are his workmates; therefore he is likely to interfere.”

Mloyi was represented by John Ndomene, who argued that his client was being charged over a matter that had not been proven by the State yet.

“Your Worship, this is a trivial matter which attracts a fine and the accused will never risk losing his job running away from a fine,” he said.

“Further to that, the seriousness of an offence is not a ground to deny an accused person bail. The State ought to give cogent reasons why my client should be denied bail.”

The court heard that on March 5, at around 6am, Mloyi entered the barracks at Cranborne in Harare where other police officers were preparing to go to their work stations.

Mloyi started shouting the presidential slur.

Other police officers who heard Mloyi confronted him over his utterances, but he reportedly stormed out of the barracks and went away.

A report was filed at Harare Central Police Station against Mloyi, leading to his arrest.

The guy was just stating obvious facts - yes Mugabe is too old to be president of Zim and yes considering how Mugabe and Grace married clearly the guy is right.

Seriously? How can this cop be arrested for stating facts that everyone knows? Mugabe is way too old to rule and everyone knows that. What's Grace profession anybody? This is going too far, people should not arrested for these trivial issues. What's so special about Mugabe? Who does he think he is?

Nothing surprising about what this cop said. This is the trend doing rounds inside Zimbabwe and the diaspora. Instead Mugabe and his wife should be very happy to know exacly what is in the minds of many Zimbabweans. Too bad for this couple but, tough luck, they cannot stop it. People are venting their anger otherwise if they keep quiet they may burst. Grace does it: she calls for rallies to spit out her vernom on her opponents to releive herself of insults people bombard her on daily basis.

Iye Grace arikutuka vanhu zuva be zuva hapana akambomusunga. This is rubbish. They are just like any citizen. If they do something wrong people have the right to comment. Grace told Mutscangwa that he is keeping someone's children. Is this not an insult at its best.? Release that officer. Haana mhosva uyo

1st you beat up teachers who are fighting for your own cause as well, then beat up limping, crippled, gogo's war vets. The Cop from Police Reaction Group, must be tired, stressed up, of continuously beating up innocent people for no apparent reason. Shame on you prosecutor, this is trivial.

X-MAN IV - 10 March 2016

True, we are saying this everyday. Mugabe is very very old and who does not know? In South Africa, the president is insulted everyday everywhere!

Yeoman Thomas - 14 March 2016

Yes, Mr. Zuma laughs away all his insults. He never wishes to kill or jail the culprits. What a contrast. I don't know what Mr. Mugabe is made of, really.
