Biti's party loses members to Mujuru party

HARARE - A new political party founded by Joice Mujuru is rapidly gaining membership after senior party members of Tendai Biti’s People’s Democratic Party (PDP) defected to her newly-formed Zimbabwe People First (ZPF) party.

The move gives Mujuru, a former State and governing Zanu PF vice president, a platform for her anti-Zanu PF views ahead of elections in 2018, where she could become a queen maker in deciding the shape of a future opposition coalition.

Mujuru re-emerged on Zimbabwe’s political scene last week with a call to abandon Zanu PF’s economic policies, tapping into growing fatigue with the governing party, in power since independence in 1980

Several members of the small PDP opposition party immediately jumped ship to join Mujuru’s ZPF.

Some of the PDP members who have crossed the floor to ZPF include former Masvingo MP Jefferson Chitando; Heya Shoko; former Bikita West MP William Zivenge; Ernest Mudavanhu, a former Zaka North MP, and Severino Tall Chambati, a former Hurungwe West MP, among others.

But PDP spokesperson Jacob Mafume claimed they were unfazed by the mass defections.

“What is clear is that Zimbabwean politics is a bit fluid,” Mafume said.

“What is important for all opposition parties is to concentrate on getting more people from Zanu PF.

“We are happy to note that more Zanu PF members are being expelled from the party, we are raring ourselves to get more people from Zanu PF. The opposition parties’ alliance is not an option but it’s a must.

“As PDP, we are not worried that our members are joining People First.

“Look, we have one enemy as opposition, which is Zanu PF.”

In a move to re-energise the party base, Biti held district rallies in Bulawayo over the weekend. “We held successful rallies in Bulawayo, people showed an appetite for opposition,” Mafume said.

A senior party member who spoke to the Daily News yesterday said that all was not well in Biti’s party.

“Everyone now knows that this project has failed. No one is still interested in this project,” the senior party member said.

“At first we thought that we commanded a huge following but the truth of the matter is that our party needs to have a coalition with other opposition parties for us to survive.”

There has been talk of Mujuru working to reach an electoral pact with other parties to challenge Mugabe’s 36-year grip on power.

@mbiti. Perhaps she has turned over a new leaf?Seen the error of her ways and all that! *laughs cynically!*

Politics of the stomach. The original MDC was a coalition of the disaffected and the opportunistic. More of these opportunistic type need to jump ship from MDC, MDC-T, ZAPU and PDP and re-join their natural home in Zanu or its surrogate PF. These briefcase politicians who jump from one party to the next regardless of what it stands for...the press should hold the feet of such politicians to the fire & question their credibility and decision making capacity. Zimbabwe was not ready for democracy in 1980 and after so many squandered opportunities and own goals to build strong democratic institutions it surely is not ready for it now.

Galore 123 - 8 March 2016

@ Moffat Makombe, Joice Mujuru has a very dubious track record going right back to the very beginning. How anyone would now trust her is a big question? Zimbabweans fall for this empty rhetoric all the time. They only have themselves to blame for their misery and suffering because so few have the courage to stand up and fight for what is right. We need fresh politicians, new leaders with new ideas. Not these idiots.

Phukit - 8 March 2016

So, Phukit and Moffat why don't you and the rest of the Zimbos VOTE the only person with NO DUBIOUS track record, the person is called RG MUGABE(ZANU PF)!!!!!!!!kkkk.

Anywhere Anytime - 8 March 2016

mbiti, Elton and welsh should go back to mdc-t as they weren't chased away in the first place. joining mujuru is a waste of time as she is a zanu appendage. better join the actual zanu as she will soon go back like Daniel shumba.

josphat mugadzaweta - 9 March 2016

If any political party is crowded by political prostitutes its future is bleak .ZPF is not going anywhere judging by the caliber of those flocking to join and very soon they shall be a dog fight there So for anyone to beat his or her chest and brag bcoz these failed politicians have joined his or her party is foolish and retrogressive bcoz the thugs will derail any movements and to make matters worse most of these political prostitutes are members of cio .

Diibulaanyika - 9 March 2016

is there democracy in the mdc t, n, b, 99. there is no democracy thats the reason we have these numerous mdcs. tsvangirai is a dictator of the same magnitude as that of mugabe. he changes his party's constitution just like it is in zanu pf. he wont allow anyone to take over from him even though his mandate expired in 2014. lets not fool ourselves that there is a democratic party in zimbabwe. the best person as of now is amai mujuru. our task as a people should be to achieve change. this appears possible if we vote wisely in the 2018 elections. vote mai mujuru for change.

Chibaya T - 9 March 2016

Lets not forget that the MDC was and still is full of opportunists an political prostitutes, people who would like to get rid of zanu pf and then exploit the country`s resources the same way as Zanu pf. This includes Tendai biti Welshman ncube, Arthur mutambara etc.

tako - 9 March 2016

Its quite unfortunate that Zimbabwe's political field is full of recycled Zanu Pf garbage. Starting from The late 80's we saw Tekere forming ZUM. He himself was pure blood Zanu PF.This was followed by ZUD a party led by Dongo Margaret with deep Zanu PF background. Later we see Morgan Tsvangirai forming MDC but look at his Political history which is also deeply rooted into Zanu PF.( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morgan_Tsvangirai) At independence in 1980 Morgan Tsvangirai, who was then aged 28, joined the then popular and victorious ZANU-PF party led by the man who was later to become his biggest political rival, Robert Mugabe. Tsvangirai is reported to have been an ardent Mugabe supporter and to have risen "swiftly in the hierarchy",[7] eventually becoming one of the party's senior officials.[8] He is also known for his role in the Zimbabwean trade union movement, where he held the position of branch chairman of the Associated Mine Workers' Union and was later elected into the executive of the National Mine Workers' Union. In 1989 he became the Secretary-General of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions, the umbrella trade union organisation of Zimbabwe. It is common knowledge that ZCTU was a Zanu PF baby. We can not talk of little known fragmaning parties formed by the power hungry Bitis, Mangomas and Ncubes they all borrowed from their Zanuism from Morgan who was nurtured by Zanu PF. Recently we saw JTR launching ZPF and its public knowledge that its another Zanu PF outfit like the others in the opposition conglomerate. Unless and until somebody new with no Zanu PF connotations joins Zimbabwe's political arena, we will continue with parroting politicians who have no clue on how to save our country from this impending quagmire we are facing as a nation.

Chakutareal - 9 March 2016

Appears to me like this Strive Masiiwa issue is all that people blame Joice for. Isn't the truth that you feel hurt by her comments about Joshua Nkomo the then VP. Question of sour grapes this.

Titus - 9 March 2016

Chakutareal. Where in Zimbabwe will you find an opposition leader who was once not Zanu pf? How our people continue to day dream .

Titus - 9 March 2016

Biti overrated himself, he thought he had massive support. Its only he realizes that the only way he can go into government is through a GNU or a coalition.

Inyika - 9 March 2016

MDC is not made of political prostitutes as one gamatox wants to lie here unless one is saying the majority of zimbabwe who support MDC are political prostitute which is blood lies of course . MDC was formed by workers anyone who does not know that or disputes that we know his brains where soiled by zanu shiit in some Border camps MDC remains the only political party for zimbos that is why if Morgan can call for a rally ANY TIME the stadium will be packed by people not forced to attend the rally . hate or like him Morgan is simply the best the rest is shiit kuphela .

Diibulaanyika - 9 March 2016

Biti swallow your pride and go back to Tsvangson.Hauna zvauri kutiitira.Sell out

weganda - 9 March 2016

Swallow your pride and go back to Tsvangirai. He is the brand name for MDC.

Nxaaaa!

Good for nothing people commenting on subjects they don't understand. In politics there is no permanent friend or enemy. In a revolution you don't change leaders with a vision until they achieve the goal they set some people think Tsvangirai is a dictator which is not true as all those people don't understand visions and ambitions. Some opportunistic former leaders of MDC where mislead by enemies of change and prosperity for Zimbabwe thereby delaying our true freedom which is to come soon as everything happens for a purpose. The same people are saying bad things about mai Mujuru whatever happen is history moreover she was not the leader of the governing party where all powers all decisions are made by one person see how bad the constitution is.Individuals manipulating the constitution thinking that they are taking over those are dictators.Let us give change chance to prevail then we draft a proper national driven constitution whereby all citizens are equal this can only be achieved by supporting people like Tsvangirai and mai Mujuru

Without saying much, mai Mujuru has her issues too. In Guruve she and David Butau, cleared land 45km x 15km to establish a sugarcane plantation and later abandoning the project, equipment there. Same rubbish in different containers. I wont vote for her. Never
