City through to next round

HARARE - Harare City are through to the Caf Confederations Cup first round after thumping AS Adema of Madagascar in their own backyard yesterday.

The Sunshine Boys had to fight from behind after an early scare which saw the home side taking a first half lead.

But goals from Raphael Manuvire, Edwin Madhananga and Kudakwashe Kumwala ensured Taurai Mangwiro’s charges progresses 6-3 on aggregate having won the first 3-2 in Harare two weeks ago.

The Sunshine Boys are now the remaining Zimbabwean club in the African Safari following champions Chicken Inn’s elimination at the hands of South African side Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday.

The Gamecocks would have taken Sundowns to a penalty shootout at Lucas Moripe Stadium but a late penalty shattered any hopes for Joey Antipas’ men. As it turned out, Sundowns progressed 2-1 on aggregate.

Harare City will now meet Zambian side Zanaco in the first round in March.

A win against the Zambians, will see City play either Malian side AS Bakaridjan or AS Kaloum Star of Guinea or Stade Gabesien of Tunisia in the final qualifying round before the group stages of the second tier African inter-club competition.
