HARARE - Two Indian nationals have been nabbed for attempting to smuggle out diamonds hidden inside their stockings.
Amitkumar Vinibhai Patel and Amarkumar Jashwantbhai Rana, who both reside in Belvedere but work in the United Arab Emirates, appeared before Harare magistrate Elijah Makomo yesterday charged with unlawful dealing in precious stones, attempted theft and smuggling.
The material had 548.25 carats of diamonds, comprising 174 pieces valued at $240 592.20.
They were remanded in custody to today for bail application.
Prosecutor Sebastian Mutizirwa alleged that on February 21, the two arrived at Harare International Airport seeking to bid for diamonds.
Patel and Rana reportedly visited Minerals Marketing Corporation of Zimbabwe (MMCZ) Complex at No. 90 Mutare Road in Msasa at around 8am.
Patel and Rana were allocated Room No. 8 in the complex.
It was further alleged that at around 2pm, the pair were allegedly spotted by a police officer on CCTV stealing diamonds.
After stealing the diamonds, they went to the toilet where they stashed the precious stones in their stockings, the court heard.
According to State papers, the accused persons’ move was in violation of house rules that prohibited anyone from bringing in or leaving with diamonds.
Police officers reportedly searched the two and found them with 174 diamond pieces which they allegedly failed to account for.
