We shouldn't have chosen Gushungo: Gumbo

HARARE - War veteran and Zimbabwe People First (ZPF) spokesperson, Rugare Gumbo, says he and his comrades made a grave error during the country’s liberation struggle when they chose President Robert Mugabe to lead the then Zanu.

Speaking at a Southern African Political and Economic Series (Sapes) debate forum on Thursday night, Gumbo said he and most of his erstwhile Zanu PF comrades were now all regretting that mistake as Mugabe was “obsessed with power” and hellbent on creating a “Gushungo dynasty”.

Gumbo was brutally purged from the warring Zanu PF in late 2014, along with former Vice President Joice Mujuru and former Presidential Affairs minister Didymus Mutasa — all of whom are now leading players in ZPF which is set to take the ruling party head-on in the eagerly-anticipated 2018 national elections.

The purged senior Zanu PF officials were accused of the serious, but untested charges of plotting to oust and assassinate Mugabe — allegations that Gumbo said many current ruling party bigwigs now also regretted not having spoken against.

“The mistake which they (current Zanu PF leadership) made, which they are now regretting is that they purged the top echelon of Zanu PF, the top organisers of Zanu PF — the chairman, the provincial administrators and so on.

“So, instead of getting the right people to fill these posts once they removed the top layer, they just uplifted the lower layers, some perhaps without any credentials or ideological orientation of what is happening, because they were just handpicked.

“So when they took over, they knew no other idea except votes of no confidence. So, that is exactly what is happening,” Gumbo said.

Commenting on the “unfortunate” appointment of Mugabe as the party’s leader following the death of Herbert Chitepo, he said the latter nationalist’s death had left a vacuum which had led to a leadership crisis — leading to Mugabe’s appointment.

“Unfortunately, that’s where our mistakes came. Instead of us looking internally amongst ourselves, we decided we needed Mugabe … and I must apologise to you, which I have done before. It was partly my mistake, I pretended to know Mugabe more than these other people and I said he is the right person for the leadership,” Gumbo said.

He said as soon as Mugabe took over the party’s leadership, it became apparent that all he wanted was power.

“So in 1980, I made a statement … I said guys we are dealing with a monster and we are going to suffer, but because of the euphoria of independence and the celebrations that were taking place, no one talked about it,” Gumbo said.

“Then he started a new agenda that is the Gushungo dynasty. That is what is killing us. The issue of succession cannot succeed because he wants his relative, wife, whatever it is to take over.

“He used to say I can’t leave because my party is going to split, it’s going to be destroyed … but the reality of the matter is that he always had his own agenda and the agenda is to develop the Gushungo dynasty,” he added.

Speaking on how he felt when he came back from Mozambique after enduring years in Zanu dungeons, the fearless Gumbo said: “We were being tortured and one day when he (Mugabe) came I had been assaulted and my eyes were red … and the guy just laughed and passed”.

It may not be a mistake to choose any person as a leader of an organisation. It is the behaviour of people around such a leader, that shapes the quality and the path of such a leader. Up today people still believe Mugabe is still being misled and fed lies. People within any organisation have power to stop any situation before it gets out of hand. Mhavaire called for mugabe to resign, long time ago but heap and praise singing continued within the revolutionary party. Zanu pf made Mugabe to be what he is today!

X-MAN IV - 21 February 2016

True what you are saying there X-MAN IV. Mr Gumbo and the like only started saying this kind of stuff now vabvondorwa nemusangano. Pese pavaimora mafuta enyika varimo muZANU PF vainge vakanyarara. Why did they not work on the party's constitution to reign Mugabe's so-called power lunacy or mongering? KO IKOZVINO what else do they seek to offer the people of Zimbabwe as political agenda other than kutaura ne zvekuipa kwaPresident? Hey, its time to sell sound political policy-ideologies NOW before 2018 than kungotaura nezveukuru. Saka dei VaMugabe vakakupaiwo mukana wekutonga nyika zvii zvamungadeno makatiitira, ZVAMAKATADZA KUITA MURI MAMINISTERS, MPs, ALL ELSE, SINCE 1980 TO 2014 WHEN YOU EVENTUALLY GOT BOOTED OUT? One other thing to Mr Gumbo, why were you not elected to lead the part ahead of President Mugabe when we lost Mr Chitepo? Hamugonizve kutungamirirazve imi????

Nyatimba Mutota - 21 February 2016

Xmen and Mutota, your point that Zanu PF members created this monster called Mugabe is true, but I feel you are a bit harsh on Gumbo. Gumbo belongs to a rare breed of nationalists among them Joshua Nkomo, Tekere, Dzino, Dumbutshena, the Mujurus to name but a few, who have in the past openly opposed and questioned Mugabe's leadership style. Like the rest in Zanu PF, who are now disappointed in Mugabe, they thought Mugabe had good intentions at heart. Mugabe was a compromise candidate at a difficult time when Zanu was again embroiled in factional feuds pitting the Manyika V the Karanga who were accused of assassinating Chitepo. Rugare Gumbo has a chequered history of opposing Mugabe and he even got incarcerated and was thrown into a bottomless pit for it. It was Joshua Nkomo and Msika who pleaded with Mugabe to let bygones be bygones and bring back all nationalists like Gumbo back into Zanu PF. Add that to Mugabe's education and eloquence, we can only feel for Rugare Gumbo because just like Tongogara and others before him, Mugabe dubbed and deceived everyone. If you ask me who is to blame the Deceiver or the victim of the deception, I will spare the victim. Mugabe still remains the reason why Zanu PF is rotten and why Zimbabwe is broken. We were all once Zanu PF in one way or the other including Tsvangirayi. Those who have realised the folly of one Matibili in the 70s, or 80s or 90s or last decade or today, must all be embraced. They are all contributing towards efforts to cleanse Zimbabwe of this political goblin called Gabriel Matibili.

Rasta Hero - 21 February 2016

Rasta you are spot on. Infact Munangagwa had been in the same direction of defying the puppet master way before the Tjolotjo declaration with the support of Jonathan Mayo and company only to sell out at the last moment with Moyo bearing the brunt of puppet master by being fired from party remember only to defy the odds by standing as an independent and winning resoundingly. Moyo did not take this kindly thus why you see Moyo fighting Ngwena tooth an nail to have him banished as well out of the party and government. Moyo does not take kindly to sellouts. What he wants is to see his fight to Ngwena till Ngwena floats in the dam eventually sinking to the bottom. What happens to ZANU PF Moyo doesn't care he never liked ZANU PF in the first place and will never like ZANU PF. He does not even harbour any aspirations to be President but to destroy what he started way back an its all documented. Vana Kasukuwere naZhuwayo I hove dzakakabira chirauro cha Moyo. Kunyeba here sis Fee. VP nguva yakwana udzai mukuru Pamumire before you lose support and respect of your supporters. What happens to ZANU PF Moyo doesn't care he never liked ZANU PF in the first place and will never like ZANU PF. YOU ARE RIGHT: MOYO STARTED SELLING OUT AFTER HIS "UNCLE" WAS BOOTED FROM ZANU AT MUGAGAO AND HE DESTERTED TO FOLLOW HIM TO UGANDA AND THEN TO RHODESIA AND BECAME A NDONGA DZAKUTASKU UNDER SITHOLE. HE NEVER BEEN AT ONE WITH MOCOMRADES FROM MGAGAO. MOYO STARTED ON HIS ROAD TO SELLING OUT LIKE HIS QUISLING SITHOLE. WENT TO STATES AND CONTINUED SELLING OUT , EMPLOYED BY FORD FOUNDATION AND CONVINCED ZANU GUYS HE HAD REPENTED AND WAS WELCOMED BACK BUT NEVER LET HIS AGENDA GO. HE WORKED TO DESTROY ZANU BY PLOTTING TSHOLOTSHO BUT NGWENA WOUD HAVE NONE OF IT - MOYO BECAME BITTER BECOZ ZANU HAD REFUSED TO BE CRUSHED FROM WITHIN BY SPLITTING. AGAIN HE WAS WELCOMED AND NOW TRIED MUJURU BUT NOT JOINING HER NUT PLOTTING AGAINST HER AND OTHE COMRADES! THAT DONE HE HAS AGAIN FOUND HIS ORIGINAL AGENDA TO KILL ZANU NOW TARGETING NGWENA. HOPE MOYO WILL RESPOND ON HIS TWITTER - HANDEI TIONE!

Edmore Shumba - 22 February 2016

Its not really Mugabe's fault gentlemen. The fault comes from the people who godfied Mugabe. Tony Gara once said Mugabe is God equating him to Jesus Christ. Today a poster says Mugabe's birthday is like Jesus Christ. This is blasphemy and these kind of praises do not help the nation. Wjat is it that Mugabe has done for Zimbabwe. Is he not the one who destroyed are farming livelihood, the collapse of industries. exodus of the sons and daughters to foreign lands, disabled and blind people struggling to make ends meet in public places (distruction of social services) etc yet you equate a mortal to God. Unnecessary praises get a human being to believe they are immortal. This our case. Zimbabweans must define their wants for and from tomorrow's leaders. Birthdays are a private affair and should be national events at the expense of poor people.

Vincent Gwarazimba - 22 February 2016

Mugabe's ambition to create a dynasty has always been apparent, and thanks Mr Gumbo for pointing this out. As far as I know, Mugabe was pinning his hopes on his son succeeding him, so he held on to power to give them time to reach the required age. When the first son turned out to have no ability to learn even the basics in education, he still hoped that his lastborn would take over from him, but you will remember how Mugabe moaned at his lastborn's school results and his subsequent expulsion from school. The first son' s record at Speciss College was also pathetic. And the wife's results with UK College were even more dis-Grace-ful. The situation became hopeful, all these kids inherited nothing, absolutely nothing from him except his gender. The daughter, who happens to have more sense than the rest of the family combined, got married to a pilot who did not want his wife to get too involved in politics. Mugabe found himself in a dilemma as to how to fulfill his dreams. Most of his crimes were committed in the mistaken belief that his family will rule Zimbabwe forever. But now Mugabe himself panicking at how things have panned out. An end is in sight, the future still elusive. Enter Grace ! In the hope of salvaging something out of her husband's mess. And become Zimbabwe's next President! Good luck Dr Amai Grace!

Guys @ ndugu nyatsimba, x-man & rasta; your echos are quite in sync with one another to the extent that I can describe you as different instruments in the same orchestra! However this is my feeling; anythong associated with zanu is tainted with the remnants of a disastrous, malignant and very metastatic DNA. If Gumbo new that rhobhati was rhabhish he should have walked out like what dabengwa did! Msipa retired because he saw that the brewing ructions were taking a toll on his health and he could not risk dying like a wild dog. simba walked out smart although he failed to develop potent wings to take off the ground. the people who did not wait to be fired still command some form of respect although they remain haunted and limited by the DNA I mentioned above. Why chastise rhobhati because you are fired? anyone will think that you are trying to buy some sympathy here! what is rugare joyce and dhidhmas are promising that they failed to do for the past.... I shy to spell the number of years! The crop that zanu is, is so pathetic to even contemplate liking whether the elements are still in the ranks, have left voluntarly after falling out of favour or after carrying deiffering opinion or have left after being fired. these guys destroyed everything that was established by the colonial regime; from ddf, gmb, csc, dairiboard(thanks to pvt capital) up to anything one can think of, be it The UZ, Harare city council(particulaly Rufaro Marketing). evey location used to have some recreational facility( mapark) but now all these have become minute forests or peri-urban farm plots inside cities. The zanu crop cannot manage anything successifully that why I think we need new blood free of the contamination of zanu DNA even in the smallest quantity/atom. zanu kagwere kaya kanoberekera pangarara kana kuti pamuchekechera to those who are not familia with ChiManyika. ihapana hapana ne zanu; they gave themselves the chance to mis-govern, IMWE CHANZI ICHABVEPI??

MukarangawekuMberengwa - 22 February 2016

Margaret Dongo once opined that Zanu PF members were Mugabe's wives. The late general Mujuru was so infuriated by that assertion that he almost manhandled her. Now we have Grace insulting VP Munangagwa like he is a truant schoolboy. The truth is that Zanu PF members have no ideological leaning that identifies them except self preservation. I am told the old man keeps a small black book with everyones transgressions. If you fail to toe the line hokoyo. Mabunda will knock on your door. So wat we have is a bunch of craven cowards scurrying for cover. Noone will stand up and be counted. Stand up for what?
