Museveni takes early lead in Uganda poll

KAMPALA - Uganda's incumbent President Yoweri Museveni has taken an early lead in the results that have been announced following yesterday's presidential election.

The electoral commission has compiled the results from 10,000 of the more than 28,000 polling stations.

It says that Mr Museveni has 62% of the vote and his main rival Kizza Beisgye has 33% of the vote.

The final preliminary results should be known by tomorrow.

Voting is still taking place in a handful of places where the late arrival of election materials meant that polling stations did not open.
