Mugabe must stop this madness

HARARE - The on-going and escalating brawling in the ruling Zanu PF is now a cause for concern and President Robert Mugabe should spring to action before it turns bloody.

War veterans and the youths are divided. His ministers are fighting, with some especially Team Lacoste which is solidly behind Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa rebelling against Mugabe.

This did not start now. It was Joice Mujuru and her presumed allies the last time,  who were accused of plotting to kill Mugabe and stage a coup before she was fired.

Zanu PF is in a mess.

It is imploding and Mr President will lose control if he does not intervene.  He has swept these issues, particularly succession, under the carpet for too long. He has to admit it and take action.

Mugabe – turning 92 in a day’s time and has ruled Zimbabwe for nearly 36 years since independence in 1980 — must understand that as a leader, part of his roles and duties are to groom and mentor capable successors openly.

But Mugabe has refused to groom a successor, let alone talk about the issue.

Up until recently, the issue has been taboo.

He has somehow — to the agony of the ordinary Zimbabweans — avoided the succession subject for years.

While Mugabe has clung to power, by hook or crook and quashing any potential future leadership, Zimbabwe and its citizens need to move on, including generations to come.

The nonagenarian has instilled fear and intimidated those who have shown ambitions to succeed him.

But what is wrong in grooming another capable leader, like what the late Nelson Mandela in South Africa did before?

Mugabe must be man enough to make sure that he resolves this issue.

The country is currently radar less. Zanu PF’s wrangling has plunged the people into poverty and the president must redress this.

Today, thousands of people are losing jobs, millions of people are living from hand to mouth and the economy continues to plunge into the abyss yet the powers that be are fighting daily.

Good wishful thinking that Mugabe can stop any madness. You are assuming that he himself is still sane. Good luck.
