Lacoste wants Mugabe out

HARARE - As the Zanu PF factional wars get deadlier and dirtier, the party faction linked to embattled Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa is increasingly mounting an open rebellion against President Robert Mugabe and his influential wife Grace, amid indications that the group wants the soon-to-be 92 years old leader out of office before the 2018 elections.

So in-your-face and aggressive have some of the utterances and tactics being employed by Team Lacoste — as the Mnangagwa faction is known — become, that there are renewed fears within Zanu PF that the ruling party’s escalating factional and succession brawls could soon boil over into bloody conflict.

Well-placed sources told the Daily News yesterday that what was particularly perturbing was the fact that Mnangagwa’s followers were increasingly challenging not just Grace, but Mugabe himself as well, in their public utterances — a situation they said did not augur well for the future of the party and the country.

“We have now entered a new ugly and uncharted territory in the life of the party and the country, where it’s difficult to predict what will happen next.

“What many of us are worried about the most is that those who are said to be fighting for Mnangagwa are more and more daring and challenging both Mugabe and his wife Grace openly, which is unheard of,” a politburo member who claims to be “non-aligned” said.

Another party insider told the Daily News last week that he was “very worried” about the extent to which the two main factions battling for supremacy within the former liberation movement now appeared “to hate each other”.

“I think anyone who says that they are not concerned by the wars will be lying. The truth of the matter is that at the rate at which things are deteriorating, it may be a matter of time before we see body bags in places like Harare and the Midlands,” the senior Zanu PF official said.

Contacted yesterday in the wake of the political developments of the past few days within the warring party, the official said the situation had “worsened” — pointing to the alleged launch by Mnangagwa’s allies of an “ominous and shady” programme dubbed Operation Shumba.

“Indeed, what is this Operation Shumba? Is it merely a play on Mnangagwa’s totem or it’s a more sinister project that is underway?

“And what makes what is happening now less grave than what (former VP) Joice Mujuru and (ex-war veterans leader) Jabulani Sibanda were expelled for from the party? I fear for the peace and stability of this country,” he said.

A source close to Team Lacoste said yesterday that there was a feeling in the camp that Grace’s blistering attack on Mnangagwa and his faction last Friday had “the blessings of the president himself” — adding further that it was “disappointing” that Mugabe had “failed” to stop his wife from opposing the Midlands godfather.

He said it was even contemplated that the faction, using a section of war veterans from the ousted veterans executive, would see the camp embarking on mass demonstrations in Harare soon.

“Apart from this, you must understand that the security establishment is critical in this war, hence the constant reference to the sector, seeing that it (security sector) is also under siege from the G40 (Zanu PF’s Young Turks known as the Generation 40 group who are opposed to Mnangagwa succeeding Mugabe),” he said.

State media, and in particular the faction’s main propaganda mouthpiece, The Herald, have also over the past few days ratcheted up their assault on Grace, VP Phelekezela Mphoko, Local Government minister Saviour Kasukuwere, Higher Education minister Jonathan Moyo, and other perceived G40 bigwigs.

Writing on his Twitter handle in response to the fightback by Mnangagwa’s allies, Moyo said he was, for once, “speechless” about the faction’s open rebellion.

“Agreed. I have said I’m tweetless after reading today’s openly defiant & rebellious lead story in @HeraldZimbabwe! We’ve heard & read of pasi neG40 slogans but never pamberi neG40. Now we read & hear of pamberi neOperation Shumba!

“@HeraldZimbabwe has some explaining to do. What does the slogan pamberi neOperation Shumba mean? Handei tione (bring it on)!

“@HeraldZimbabwe quotes matter of factly lies Tomana was arrested & “sentenced to a year in prison”. Handei tione!” Moyo said.

In the meantime, the suspended party leadership in the provinces of Masvingo and Midlands are doggedly dismissing their suspensions as a nullity — in apparent defiance to Kasukuwere who announced the suspensions acting on instructions from Mugabe.

Conelious Mupereri, the Zanu PF Midlands provincial executive, told the Daily News yesterday that the charges laid against their leadership were “baseless and therefore hard to accept”.

“The decision to suspend our chairperson only came much later and we will only sit and decide later. We do not have dates yet. But the problem with that decision is that the allegations are not valid because no one was ever beaten or stopped from attending the (Harare) rally,” he said.

“It is difficult to see why a person could be charged on such baseless allegations,” a defiant Mupereri said.

Reacting to utterances by deposed war veterans leader Christopher Mutsvangwa and his ousted executive on Monday, interim chairperson of the war veterans, Mandi Chimene, said Mutsvangwa and company were wasting their time.

“Hapana anombobvuma (it is normal for ousted people to resist their dismissal), even when a wife is shown the door she continues holding on saying handiende, handiende (I will not go)”, she said.

“Even during the war, some left us and that can happen. I am not talking about factions but about war veterans loyal to the president. Have you ever heard me being associated with any power mongering?

“I was actually surprised when I heard that comrades had made me their leader. If they are interested in future elections they can come back and contest, but for now vambonzi imbomirai makonewa (they have been turfed out),” Chimene added.

Speaking in Harare on Monday, former war veterans secretary-general, Victor Matemadanda, took direct aim at Grace, panning the “abusive language and the vilification of the war veterans” at her Rushinga rally in October last year.

He also claimed that there was brutal and inhuman treatment of citizens by Kasukuwere through the destruction of people’s homes and livelihoods in urban areas — an effective attack on Mugabe who demanded the latest house demolitions in Harare.

Matemadanda also waded into the sub-judice matter involving the criminal case against Prosecutor-General Johannes Tomana, which is related to the recent attempted bombing of Gushungo Dairy in Mazowe.

He also bizarrely claimed that Tomana had been tried and sentenced to one-year in prison, while he was out of the country on State business.

“Where else have you seen a prosecutor-general being tried and sentenced while in the west or north Africa? He was sentenced to a year in prison. Imagine this is a man you entrusted as the custodian of your laws,” Matemadanda said.

“He is arrested, tried and sentenced while he is far way from his country. You shove him in an open truck. You are humiliating your own Constitution. You want us to be persuaded by somebody to see that this is nonsense,” he said.

And in pointed remarks similar to what had seen former war veterans leader Jabulani Sibanda being expelled from Zanu PF, Matemadanda said: “The powers of the State are not given to two or three people. It is one and that one is President Mugabe.”

He also savaged Mphoko indirectly, saying there was no place for ethnicity slurs in Zimbabwe as the co-VP had allegedly done when he spoke at Grace’s Chiweshe rally last week.

Mugabe's term ends in 2018. Removing him by violence is unlawful and you will be sowing seeds of lawlessness. Why not call a special Zanu PF Congress, pass a vote of no confidence, RG resigns, and the newly elected leader takes over. It's more orderly. With this you are actually proving Grace correct, the ED wants to remove EG before his term ends.

Who says E Munangagwa can't rule, who says J Mujuru can't be president, who says M Tsvangirai can't rule, who says D Dabengwa can't be president of Zimbabwe. What's so special with Robert Mugabe that he is imposed life president of Zimbabwe. Its only the stupid blinkered dufty people who have been brain washed by a few corrupt who will lose it all if Mugabe who has managed to manipulate these gullible generals into corrupt activities so he can control them by threatening then with imprisonment or banishment from the party if they don't tore the line and will lose it all when somebody legitimate is to rule. Now Mugabe pretends not to see what is happening on the ground yet he is briefed on a daily bases, he is the first to read all the dailies before anyone else, and busy feeding his missus on what to say on those star doctor fake G rallies so as to test the waters. Munangagwa be man enough, come out in the open and declare you ambitions unless you want to die a deputy like Simon Muzenda. Tsvangirai has come out in the open so is Amai Mujuru, Simba Makoni and Dumiso. Stand up man up unless if you are a coward then tell your supporters to shut up and stop this cold war with your master and be like any other ZANU of puppet. VARUME MIRAI UKO. NDONGOZVITAURA

We in the MDC and other freedom lovers are girding our loins for life after Zanny Pf. I think the demise and inevitable exit of this rotten clique will certainly mitigate the drought the country is facing. We will then normalise relations with the world, including the west, re-engage as members of the commonwealth, why not? re-establish normal business laws, not stealing and chasing away investors all in the name of indeginisation and necessarily create jobs, Halala. boy can I wait!?

nhlansi - 17 February 2016

Well done Daily News. What is so special about the Lacoste faction.Mujuru faction departed, now it is their turn to depart.Let Grace clean up the party for One Centre of Power.Cleaning up ZanuPF is the best thing ever to happen to the country.Handei tione. We wait Tyson next move, dissolve entire Masvingo Executive.

Not so long ago Dailynews used to write the evil deeds of Grace and Jonathan but today they seem to be on their side. I delieve they are now allowed to cover Grace's rallies without being threatened like before. They and Grace are now bed fellows.Indeed Dailynews is there to make money and care less about the security of poor Zimbabweans.Vari kurwisanisa vanhu. What does G40 represent by way of policies, values, direction etc? Who is its leader? The character of Grace as a leader of G40 is worrying, uninspiring and chaotic. The objectives of G40 are unclear. They want a 92 year old to continue ruling even though incapacited by age. People of Zimbabwe all want change. Change from Mugabe's rule to somebody younger. The Lacoste group is known but not likeable but will give Zimbabwe some stability. Which way Zimbabwe?

Mambo - 17 February 2016

Seka zvako mwana we Ngonya.Vengesai Musengi a Lacoste Youth Leader says they are going to beat up Grace at her next rally. So Grace is right afterall.Mugabe will wish Jabulani Sibanda was still around. He did not threaten his wife physically like this.See report in Zim Eye.

Kufandanda - 17 February 2016

I would rather have Grace ascending to the highest position in Zimbabwe than Ngwena. If we really want to get rid of ZANU, never allow ED. He is very powerful. It willl take another 20 years to remove him. Gire wont even last 3 months. So leave G40 alone unless you want us to be in turmoil for another 20 years. Otherwise, going by the TB Joshua prophesy which said, they would be turmoil in a southern african country as from end of february, you can almost predict that its going to be Zimbabwe. LET IT PLAY.

Jaluo - 17 February 2016

daily news journalist be professional if you are Zimbabwean report as it is.We don't need your opinion sic

magamba - 17 February 2016

Kufandada, the issue is no sane person would want to be led by Grace as president. Except a few who have self-interest to fulfil, like chiyangwa and Kasukuwere who have had some nocturnal benefits like Southly park housing cooperatives. Zhuwawo is definitely wishing if his relatives can be a ruling dynasty so he remains a minister although he has unreservedly shown that he is NOT ministerial material. Jonathan Moyo is still in his agenda to destroy ZANU from within. Grace thought she could bulldoze her way to presidency under veil of ailing Mugabe. She is now surprised that the generals and whole system is allergic to her. She is in panic mood. She has even put her husband's position under threat in 2018 or before. I estimate that by March 2016, something radical will happen in Zimbabwe. Munangagwa is not afraid of death. He has been on death row twice 1st by Smith, secondly by Nkomo in Egypt. The major mistake that the unintelligent and condom-wise usable Mphoko did, was to disparage the Karangas. He has succeeded in ensuring that his grave shall not be in Zimbabwe. Prodeant Vazilla (defeat is not on our agenda) Just wait shortly and see howfire burns.

Danai Pazvagozha - 17 February 2016

Not good to see this report because if true this spells big trouble something our country can do without. I'm not on any side but have to say that Mai Grace has way over stepped her boundary and appears to be the prime source of the stirring. Comrade President please reign in your wife because she is behaving badly and lacking in political maturity. Sad days for Zimbabwe. Our behaviour is a big embarrassment for this continent, we are not setting any good example?

Well Munangagwa can not remove Mugabe he is coward unless if Mugabe was not armed maybe but the bottom line is the guy is a blood coward and he is down and out . What ever he is saying those are the last kicks of dying horse . The only people enjoying the drama in zanu are mdc supporters and zimbabweans in general .So far so good and they is no need for mdc t to go making noise zanu is doing that for the workers 's party .Mahoka said Munangagwa will die and Munangagwa must take note of that . People of this country are tired of zanu and those who want to form another zanu after being booted out of that satanic party .

Diibulaanyika - 17 February 2016

It will be a shame if zim can have this Chituta and evil Munangagwa be president the guy is dander head like it or hate it that is what he is .He must simply resign or risk dying .

Diibulaanyika - 17 February 2016

The problem with Team Lacoste is that they are operating underground . At least for G40 we know who is who? ED is a coward who deserves what he is getting now. As VP he can also call for a rally eg to update the povo on food sourcing and use this to utter whatever nonsense he can think of. Majority of Zimbabeans they do not like him because he is linked to the army and they suspect him to be behind the death of the beloved General Mujuru. In Kweke many people are aware he destroyed Zisco with Mai Mujuru. Big companies in Gweru are operating below 50 % yet we have him there as VP from that region. He might be a good strategist in some areas but with Moyo Prof. He stands no chance.

The security chiefs should not stand and watch while a secretary cum husband snatcher is kicking them in the teeth. If they sit and watch then they are useless. A coup is in the making. Grace is going to run away from Zimbabwe.

ephraim - 17 February 2016

A source close to Team Lacoste said yesterday that there was a feeling in the camp that Grace's blistering attack on Mnangagwa and his faction last Friday had “the blessings of the president himself”. Mugabe is afraid of going on the jagular when it comes to Ngwena. His plan is to wear/chip him down slowly because he is not so sure of the outcome. Under pressure from his dumb-headed wife he is not sure of what to do now: listen to his aging body or summon up the last of what he has and dive for it. Either way he sees the boomerang. he is however certain that in Zimbabwe hapana kana one anokwanisa kukanda mbama: zvikukuvatavata chete, vanhu vake for a lifetime.

Masamba Akareyo - Tanganda - 17 February 2016

Team Lacoste wants Mugabe out but the big question do they have the guts to tell him in his face. Not wanting Mugabe is not new, telling him to retire or resign is another. I cannot see these cowards doing it.

Inyika - 17 February 2016

These War vets, failed to come to the defence of their own when JB led adminstration raised the bedroom coup. The same bedroom coup is making them jump again. Mavhaire said Bob must go during that famous year and mukati anopenga. I urge the 1st lady and the G40 to kick, hit and boot harder these war vets. I think this might knock some sense in these war vets. Lacoste must impeach or pass a vote of no confidence in Bob and call for a speacial congress once and for all otherwise they are on they way out. The worse thing is that they cant merge with Pf Mujuru for the previous and still fresh rift.
