Open letter to Sulu Chimbetu

EDITOR — I write about what transpired on October 31, 2015 in Mabvuku at one of your shows where the fans were tear-gassed.

I want you to know that I am a Dendera fan since the days of your father Simon “Chopper, Mr Benson, Mr Viscos” Chimbetu.

When I see you perform the song Shura Regore Riya, it reminds me of your father who was promoted to the other world in August 2005.

Back to the issue in question, I want to unequivocally state that we are not squarely to blame for what happened for the following reasons; one, when the zero hour came, you had not yet arrived and secondly we are fully aware that it was a kind of sabotage directly aimed at you due to the nature and circumstances — under normal circumstances ordinary citizens do not have access to security apparatus like teargas.

Whoever did it must be brought to book for the protection of the public because this could result in a stampede if the venue is fully-packed like what happened sometime ago at the National Sports Stadium where some people lost their lives during a match between Zimbabwe and South Africa.

Moreover, the affected people, including myself, are your fans who had done nothing wrong except to show unwavering support for your career.

We fully know that teargas can only be discharged by law enforcement agents in order to quell violence which was a million times non-existent at this venue.

My brother, you are not a low-profile musician and you are son of revered hero of the liberation struggle.

What we expect from you is a simple apology to your beloved fans because one day some of your fans could die if such incidents happen at your shows.

You must use your influence to engage the authorities so that they investigate the tear-gassing of your fans.

We love your shows and we do not want fans to be tear-gassed when all they want is to enjoy the show.

Dendera Fan, Chenjerai Hondo Masviba

Are you complaining about his late arrival for the show or what? You just explained what transpired on the day in question but then so what?
