War vets defect to People First

HARARE - A number of war veterans have dumped Zanu PF for People First (PF) as the yet-to-be-launched Joice Mujuru political formation gains more ground.

This came out during a PF meeting held in Masvingo on Saturday.

Attended by former Zanu PF senior officials Dzikamai Mavhaire, Kudakwashe Bhasikiti and Retired Colonel Claudious Makova, the meeting was attended by over 30 war veterans, including district coordinators drawn from various districts in the province.

Some war veterans described the meeting as heralding the dawn of a new era.

“It’s quite clear that the tide is turning in the right direction as we follow Mai Mujuru, who is one of us, a liberation hero whose record does not need any one to clarify,” said one war veteran who only identified himself as Shoko.

“We foresee a new dawn and from the meeting, you could tell that we are heading somewhere.

“We can’t be part of a regime that demeans us, where confusion is the order of the day, so we saw it prudent to do the most honourable thing and follow Amai Mujuru.”

Nyasha Shamu, a Chivi war veteran and one of the meeting organisers, said: “As war veterans, I can assure you three quarters of people from this province are now with PF. The major reason being, what we fought for is no longer recognised by the present regime. Zanu PF is now only concentrating on entrenching the longevity of Mugabe and his family at our expense. Besides, our entire sister organisations vana chimbwido nanamujibha have totally been ignored. They have been vetted time and again pasina chinobuda so we are now sick and tired of that nonsense.”

PF assistant spokesperson Retired Colonel Kudzai Mbudzi told the Daily News yesterday that People First was fast gaining ground.

“Yes, it’s true that hordes of war veterans are flocking to join People First throughout the country,” he said. “Amai Mujuru is personally empathically accommodative of former freedom fighters.”

Mbudzi said this was all because of the former VP’s call for a War Veterans Freedom Fighters Wing.

“Being a former senior commander of the war veterans herself during the liberation struggle, Amai Mujuru has now called for the establishment and the institutionalisation of a War Veterans Freedom Fighters Wing at all the administrative levels of People First structures from national level unlike in Zanu PF where war veterans are only incrementally viewed as sympathetic associates of that party.”

Mbudzi added: “In People First, the constitution will then provide for a stand-alone and distinctive freedom fighters wing within the party and would then have an equal opportunity with anybody else at all levels to participate in its activities.

“So, apart from the main, women’s and youth wings, the People First constitution also provides for a freedom fighters wing.”

Mbudzi said President Robert Mugabe, his wife Grace and other senior Zanu PF officials have in the past shown the highest disregard for ex-freedom fighters, calling them all sorts of names.

“Today, Mugabe and Zanu PF havachambodi kana kunzwa nezve mawar veterans and other freedom fighters. So it’s only prudent for every war veteran and other freedom fighters to cross the political rubicon to the new gathering point of freedom fighters and significant others in a permissive atmosphere of genuine, empathic and comradely love with total undivided and individualised acceptance.”

Mbudzi said this was the only opportunity Zimbabweans might be getting to join the party.

He said: “As we are witnessing on a daily basis, people from all walks of life with different past political histories are flocking to join People First.

“In the same manner and with the same pleasure, we would want to urge others who are still sitting on the fence to follow suit than to want to wait for some future coalition talks and process which might never come in order to be integrated into People First.”

Mbudzi said it was wise for people to dissolve their respective parties and join PF now in their individual capacities than to want to wait to be incorporated through the envisaged and much-hyped coalition talks.

You have to feel pity for these war refugees for all this tomfoolery. Everyone is speaking on behalf of this Joice Mujuru person but she has not come forward to say she is heading the new zanu splinter party. She clearly doesn't want to upset her benefactor old Bob & if she doesn't have the courage of her convictions how do you expect to be lead by such? All these people are jostling for position in this new perceived administration and if they don't get the position they think they deserve they will be off again to Croco team or Happy Gangster crew or even MDC-Tsvangirai.

War Veterans, mai mujuru, mnangagwa, mutsvangwa, kasukuwere bhasikiti, rugare gumbo bla bla bla.....they are all just zanu. I just pray that my fellow good Zimbabweans don't get fooled. These people are all zanu and all the same and will never ever change their ways.

Please spare us this crap. This paper has become a mouthpiece for forces bent on discrediting our revolutionary party and its leaders. What new things will come from Mai Mujuru who has held top govt and party positions since 1980 but failed to articulate any single issue for freedom fighters except looting the war vets compensation fund? Whilst it is anyone's right to freedom of choice and association it is tomfoolery to mislead people especially freedom fighters into believing that PF has everything is the panacea to our plight. This all pungent hot air coming from another doomed western to try and wrest control of Zimbabwe's resources by proxy. We are not fools, and are not open to abuse.

Some war vets are like top branches, they sway in every breeze. How many of these war vets were with solidly behind Jabulani Sibanda and his thugs in 2008? Since Sibanda is a senior PF member, these are all his thugs. In 2008 the war vets terrorized the nation to have Mugabe re-elected they now want to do the same for Mujuru!

In 36 years Zimbabwe still does not have a definitive political character with at least 3 fundamental ideologies. These ideologies would each define a political formation, hence having only three political parties. All you have is opportunists who try at every chance to form groupings which do not identify with any original belief of the African struggle as their bases. Zanupf began as Marxist Socialists but at night were truly Capitalists and thieves. As the gravy became more and more tasty, all ideologies were thrown out of the nearest window. It became anarchical and a free for all. As a result, in came the democracy and labour based ideology through the formation of the MDC. It ushered itself as a very powerful opposing force as Zimbabweans were hungry and desperate for a lasting alternative. However the gravy train passed by and these too were sucked in the fray of free rides and non ideology. As we speak they are no longer relevant. In then comes a puked Mujuru under the pretense of renewing the original ideas though in reality she's simply shaking off the dust from the fall and trying to look good in spite of that devastating fall. No thanx ma'm. Zimbabwe now needs a completely new political dispensation with very little reference to the bush struggle but more of a character drawn out of the present struggles. The war ended 36 yrs ago for goodness sake. We need much younger, energetic and forward looking cadres who have the interests of the country at heart. No more of these decorated war heroes. They did their part that we so much appreciate but its now time to pass on the button and bring back the glory that our nation was known for.

Above comment says it all!!! Excellent summation!

Mai Mujuru claimed 55% disability for war compensation back in the 90s. Any person who seriously thinks she is worth talking about must be sick.

Col Mbudzi your PF will have to accomodate other parties in their current form. Trying to have them disband and join PF will only entrench umbimbindoga and at the end of the day these parties will feel shortchanged and will want to go it alone thus splitting the opposition movement further apart. PF should respect the current opposition movement as people that stood up to zanu and mugabe while them anaCol Mbudzi and Mujuru were having a good time in zanu pf where they even failed to lift a finger at his misrule.

Nyimo - 20 January 2016

@ Realist. You said it all. MDC started well but went off the rails during GNU. That's when all Zimbabweans were supposed to stamp our authority over Zanu PF.

I remember Nov 1997 when the so called war veterans got $50000.00 each after cornering Mugabe. That s the day hell broke lose in Zimbabwe. War vets bought watches for their dogs, cabbages for their cattle and paid fares for full buses to different destinations. This crop of war vets and sound reasoning don't go hand in glove. Its a non event that Mai Mujuru ha s a bunch of these in her project

Its not time for bickering. Morgan and the rest tried their best...but no we need unity to bring the country form the brink...bring dignity, jobs, rule of law, respect for our youth and our elders. Society is in tatters and only the big honcho's families are at peace and enjoying the fat of the land. Some elders and even war vets have lost a lifetime of opportunities as the vanguard party continues its corrupt and careless scourge blaming everything except their lack of vision and policy. Who can stay aboard a half sunk titanic in his or her right mental faculties? Is it about a priviledged few? What is wrong with the so called war government which rules by emotions and forgets sanity and rationality? Only the children of the powers that be are 'children' ours are for raping and misdirecting ideologically at the moribund Border Gezi insitutions where you never see ministers' kids. Enough is enough. No Pasaran! We must go to 2018 as on body....undivided and in solidum.....If we dont then we are dead...there will be no life in this land! We are already at the edge of the precipice and the helmsman aka kapitan is blind as a bat! BEWARE OF DISUNITY!

Zimbabweans wake up and smell the coffee , War vets to Mai Mujuru , this is nonsense , whey you fought the war what was you aim , for democracy is it so , so real war vets wont impose leaders they let the people vote for the leaders , All who are claiming to be war vets you know what you fought for why allowing Mugabe who hijacked the revolution and changed the whole leadership to suit him , we must not keep on repeating the same errors which Zvobyo and friends did when they crafted the Zanu PF constitution to prop up Mugabe and then realised that they have done the wrong thing , we need the party with the people's input in it , lets forget about being a war vet you plaid your part during the war , now we need educated and energetic people to move our country forward we need development nit destroying like what Mugabe and Mujuru and their evil cabals have done , 36 years gone now we are still driving in gravel and pot holed roads in towns excuse me , wake up smell the coffee .
