Marathon star to tie the knot

HARARE - Every finish line is the beginning of a new race and Collen Makaza does not want to start another marathon without the love of his life by his side.

A few months into his Legends’ Marathon victory celebrations, Makaza has announced his imminent marriage to marathon runner Precious Mukuza.

The marriage is taking place at Harare Central Prison this Saturday.

The unsung two-time World 50 kilometre champion in Ireland and Qatar broke his own Legends’ Marathon record by almost five minutes in East London, South Africa back in October.

But he says all his records are incomparable to walking down the aisle to the woman he has known for close to 15 years.

The 35-year-old Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services officer met his wife at Black Rhinos Athletics Club at the turn of the millennium.

At that time, Makaza helped Mukuza get attachment with South Africa Elite Performance Group club to harness her long distance running abilities.

Makaza says: “We became inseparable and were like two identical twins. I am glad that this day has arrived. I started to train her middle and long distance running and she did well.”

Mukuza eloped in 2004 before giving birth to their first baby the following year.

“She gave birth to a baby girl. After two weeks, the baby became ill with yellow fever and died. We continued with our athletics career. She won her first marathon in African University Peace Marathon,” Makaza said.

Like her husband 33-year-old Mukuza is also a prisons officer.

She hails from Murewa.

“As per our culture and tradition, we have invited our friends, family and the community to celebrate this special moment with us,” Makaza said.

Makaza has had memorable international events.

Although he did not compete in the Legends Marathon in 2014 due to his participation at the IAU World 50km Final in Doha, Qatar, he is quickly gaining a reputation as an African ultramarathon king.

Makaza has achieved four top ten Two Oceans marathon finishes.

He is a record holder of Comrades marathon half way 45km and Chatsworth marathon record holder 50 km and the east London legends marathon 68km.

The couple is blessed with three sons Collen Junior, Craig and three months old Clive.
