Cheetahs handed tricky draw

HARARE - Zimbabwe's Sevens’ rugby team will play against South Africa, England and Kenya on match day one of the inaugural HSBC Cape Town Sevens on Saturday.

This follows World Rugby’s announcement of the pools for round two of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series that takes place on December 12 and 13 at the Cape Town Stadium.

In Pool A Dubai Sevens’ winners Fiji will be hoping to make it back to back tournament wins when they tackle Argentina, Scotland and Russia.

Pool C consists of USA, Australia, Wales and Portugal whilst New Zealand who finished fourth in Dubai are in Pool D along with Samoa, France and Canada.

The Sevens tournament is the second leg of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series being played a week after the opening tournament in Dubai on December 4 and 5.

Zimbabwe is the only non-core side at the tournament but will not be fazed having rose above expectations in previous international Sevens tournaments.

The Cheetahs last month came agonisingly close to booking a spot at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games the easy way after taking the lead 12-7 into the break of the qualifiers final against Kenya.

However, a last-minute try by Kenya’s Dennis Ombachi denied the Cheetahs who in the end went down 19-21.

They now face a tricky repechage tournament to book a spot in the 2016 Summer Olympics slated for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in August.

Cheetahs Squad: Jacques Leitao, Njabulo Ndlovu, Tapiwa Tsomondo, Riaan O’Neill, Kudakwashe Chiwanza, Boyd Rouse, Graham Kaulback, Stephan Hunduza, Lenience Tambwera, Shayne Makombe.
