Mr Ugly to go global

HARARE - Mr Ugly Zimbabwe pageant founder David Machowa has set his sights on an ambitious programme of turning his contest into a global one as early as next year.

Machowa, whose hilarious dance styles have earned him the moniker Apama Styles, is confident that the three editions of Mr Ugly Zimbabwe he has organised have armed him with the necessary skills and experience to organise an international pageant to be named Mr Ugly World.

But before the world pageant becomes a reality, Apama Styles intends to host a contest for the continent’s ugliest men dubbed Mr Ugly Africa to be held either in Zimbabwe or South Africa.

“After hosting this year’s edition of Mr Ugly Zimbabwe where the ugliest man in the country was chosen, I have decided to take the pageant to the next level because the event generated interest from all corners of the world.

“Some countries, including Uganda even described  Mr Ugly Zimbabwe Mison Sere as being too handsome, claiming that he cannot match their ‘own men’ in terms of ugliness.

“As a result, we are going to host Mr Ugly Africa before the world pageant,” said Machowa.

The Mr Ugly Zimbabwe founder added that the financial challenges that hindered him from holding last year’s edition will not stop him from thinking big.

“Challenges are always there in life but there is no need for us to dwell too much on them. The fact that we failed last year does not mean we will fail tomorrow.

“I can confirm that funding is starting to trickle in and I am optimistic that we are going to host one of the biggest pageants in the world.

“We have engaged a number of corporate organisations for financial assistance and preliminary indications are very promising,” said Machowa.

He, however, dismissed the view that his plans to come up with Mr Ugly Africa and Mr Ugly World are being motivated by greed.

“I am being pushed on by passion, nothing else. To be honest I am not getting anything in terms of cash from the pageant. Passion has pushed me to get this far,” said Machowa

The Mr Ugly pageant, which commenced in 2012, was dominated by William Masvinu until this year when he was dethroned by Sere.

The dethronement of Masvinu was characterised by chaos after the Epworth-based man refused to concede defeat to Sere claiming the jury had unfairly given his crown to an undeserving man.
