Carelse-Juul defends SA base

HARARE - Aspiring Zifa president Trevor Carelse-Juul says the fact he is based in South Africa and is always globetrotting should not be used as an excuse to discredit his campaign.

There are fears the Johannesburg-based businessman will be an ‘absentee president’ if he wins Saturday’s election to replace Cuthbert Dube.

Juul is going against three other candidates — Philip Chiyangwa, James Takavada and Leslie Gwindi — and speaking at his manifesto launch yesterday came out guns blazing.

“People have asked me, you are not permanently here, how are you going to run football from out there?” he said.

“Do we not understand that this is a global village today, that there is technology, we can jump onto the plane and be anywhere in an hour or two hours.

“And there is a country next door to us called Zambia, who a few years ago became African champions and if I am not mistaken their chairman and an ex-football person lives in South Africa.

“(Kalusha) Bwalya! So what are we saying that Zambia shouldn’t put that person in charge because he lives outside the country?

“You should understand what Bwalya is doing in Zambia. He took Zambia from nowhere to where they are now; powerhouses on the continent.

“One of the immediate things he focused on was to win the Africa Cup of Nations and that’s exactly what I am going to do.

“Today, I’m running businesses and projects in Africa. I have businesses in Tanzania, Nigeria, here and in South Africa. And how do I run that, am I physically involved?

“No! I have got systems in place, I have got methodologies in place, I have got teams in place, I have got organisational structures in place and my leadership delegates and ensure that people have responsibility and accountability and they deliver. That is how you achieve.”

Juul added: “The previous football executive stayed here all day but look where our football is. It doesn’t matter where you are sitting; it’s important how you are sitting and what you are putting in place to deliver. That’s the important part. It’s the system, the methodology and delegation of authority.

“I have a passion for Zimbabwe, I have a passion for our football, I grew up with football, I love the game and I love everybody who is involved with the game.

“My dream is to see Zimbabwe up there playing in the World Cup, winning the Africa Cup and with our ladies going to the Olympics, why should we not go there and win a medal and that’s what I am looking to achieve and I believe we can.

“We all know that football is not where it should be at the moment.

“I can assure you that had I come in two years ago, we would be on our way to qualify for the World Cup, the Dream Team reality would be happening.

“Unfortunately, we are not even in it at this stage. We sit with huge debts and football has got to a position where the councillors realised they had to step in and change things.

“What is important now is that the councillors make the right decision for football, not for individuals, not for egos, but for football.”

You are very right Juul. Our president is always out of the country and his absenteeism has never been raised by anyone. He spends more time in an airplane than an office making it difficult for him to set up a teleconference. I hope you win this post maybe Zim football will be spared ZANU PF politics.

Juul, don't talk about Zambia, because we are not Zambians. We want our ZIFA president to be where our football is. That is, here in Zimbabwe.
