Soccer Stars selection today

HARARE - Following an intriguing 2015 Castle Lager Premiership season, football writers, coaches and captains will meet in Harare today to select the Soccer Stars of the Year.

Newly-crowned champions Chicken Inn are expected to provide the bulk of the finalists with their captain Danny Phiri heavily tipped to win the Soccer Star of the Year award.

Phiri is likely to be joined by his teammates Edmore Chirambadare, Elvis Chipezeze, Clemence Matawu and Lawrence Mhlanga.

FC Platinum, who went on a 21-match unbeaten run, are likely to have forward Brian Muzondiwa, defender Gift Bello and midfielder Gerald Takwara on the calendar.

The Zvishavane-based side last tasted defeat when they lost 1-0 to Dynamos on May 5, and were on the Gamecocks’ coattails throughout the season before dropping points in the last two games of the season.

Highlanders, who struggled throughout the season before turning around their campaign in the last six games, will be largely expected to provide forward Knox Mutizwa while Bruce Kangwa has an outside chance.

With Bosso wobbling to a sixth place finish, Mutizwa was on fire scoring 14 goals in the league to bag the Golden Boot award.

Dethroned champions Dynamos, who finished in second position on the log will be hoping that the duo of Ocean Mushure and Tatenda Mukuruva make it onto the calendar.

Triangle and Chapungu, who both had decent seasons, are likely to provide Hillary Bakacheza and Tinei Chitora.

CAPS United defenders Stephen Makatuka and Dominic Mukandi also caught the eye, so did FC Platinum’s Brian Muzondiwa, Gift Bello and Gerald Takwara.

Chicken Inn coach Joey Antipas will be going against his FC Platinum counterpart Norman Mapeza for the Coach of the Year award.

There are also prizes for Referee of the Year, Rookie Player of the Year, Best Under-20, Goalkeeper of the Year and the Most Disciplined Team of the Year.

The league’s sponsors, Delta Beverages through their Castle Lager brand will be sponsoring the prizes for the winners.

After the voting today, the 11 players making it onto the calendar will be announced immediately while the Soccer Star and his runners-up will be named at a banquet in the capital on Friday evening.
