Form delights Makatuka

HARARE - CAPS United defender Stephen Makatuka is pleased with his personal form this season and feels he could have done enough to be among the 11 outstanding players.

Having struggled for game time last year, the 27-year-old has started 29 games for the Green Machine in a campaign during which he claims to have come of age.

Makatuka has had an impressive season for Makepekepe, establishing himself at the heart of a punishing Green Machine defence that gave very little away, especially after return of former midfielder Lloyd Chitembwe as coach.

The former Hippo Valley defender transformed himself into United’s defensive pillar, which eventually earned him a call to the national team during the Chan final qualifier against Lesotho.

“I think this has been my best season so far. I think I gained a lot of experience. Last year, I didn’t get much game time. But this year I think I have done relatively well. You can even see by the number of matches that I have played,” Makatuka told the Daily News.

Makatuka is still yearning to improve his game further, and has heaped praise on his coach Chitembwe helping him to produce some fine displays this season.

“The coach has shown a lot of faith in me, especially over the last couple of months, I have stayed fit, the coach has chosen me, and I enjoyed my football.

“I think he is very honest. He says what you are doing very well and what you can improve. He has real belief in you. Since he came he has bought a lot of seriousness in the squad and the fighting spirit is now superb. I think we can only get better going forward.”

Makatuka, will not be available for selection this afternoon after picking up a red card in his team’s 1-1 draw against FC Platinum last weekend.

The setback has denied him a rare feat of starting all 30 Castle Lager Premiership matches this season.

“I would have wanted to play all the league games this season but in football such things happen and we have to accept it,” added Makatuka.

“This is the only match I will miss this season which is a reflection on how I performed. I hope the other guys will do good job to sign off the season in style. We also still in the run for the Easycall Cup and I hope we will do well as well.”
