Zim seeks $60m for Airport road

HARARE - Zimbabwe is seeking at least $60 million to complete the construction of the Harare International Airport Road, Transport minister Joram Gumbo has said.

Gumbo told journalists yesterday at the official opening of the road that after completing the first phase of the road, at a cost of $15,8 million government was now mobilising more funds to complete the second phase.

“Work on the completion of the road has been held back by the unavailability of funds, but we hope to do it soon. We intend to employ a Built-Operate-Transfer philosophy on the second phase and we are currently in discussions with some companies to that effect,” he said.

The second phase of the road comprises a direct link from Dieppe roundabout through Braeside suburb, over the National Railways of Zimbabwe marshalling yard and Robert Mugabe Way leading into Enterprise Road with a continuous flyover estimated to be almost half a kilometre.

“The design of the road and flyover is estimated to cost $5 million and the road and flyover construction is estimated to cost $55 million. Efforts are underway to secure funding for the phase 2,” Gumbo said.

President Robert Mugabe, who was guest of honour at the event, said the availability of suitable and adequate infrastructure was a necessary condition for the economy to take off.

“As will be appreciated, this road is very strategic as it leads to the main international airport in the country.

“This is the first road visitors to Zimbabwe, be they dignitaries, foreign investors or even tourists, see as they come into the country,” he said.

Mugabe noted that the total cost of the dual road construction and provision of services and road furniture for the first phase of the project  from Harare
International Airport to Dieppe Road roundabout ending at the Coca Cola Corner —amounted to $15,8 million.

“Clearly, infrastructure development is expensive, hence whenever we undertake such projects, we must demand that the product be of high quality, durable and give good value for money, once completed.

“Sub-standard work should never be tolerated. In this regard, we must always ensure that qualified contractors are engaged and that they are strictly supervised to guarantee acceptable results,” he added.Zim seeks $60m for Airport Road

At the inception of this project we were told there would be five flyovers along airport road. Is the Ministry of transport telling us that the original design that was done by Augur investments in concurrency with City of Harare has been shelved? Why is the design being changed now? Is it because of huge costs associated with the project? If completion of the remaining part of Airport road is going to cost $60 what then will be the cost of constructing the Beitbridge - Harare - Chirundu Road?
