Wife pours boiling water on baby

HARARE - A Warren Park 1 wife killed her baby after attempting to pour a jug of scalding water over her husband after an infidelity row.

The six-month-old baby suffered fatal first degree burns to the body after the assault at their home in Warren Park this month.

The baby sustained injuries showing painful blistering stretching from his scalp to his lower back.

Fortune Vutete, 27, appeared before Harare magistrate Tendai Mahwe charged with physical abuse and culpable homicide.

The State consented to have her released on $50 bail.

She was ordered to continue residing at her present address and report once every week at Warren Park Police Station.

The complainants are Vutete’s husband Owen Mironga and the State represented by the now deceased Munesuishe T Mironga.

Prosecutor Idah Maromo alleged that on November 15 around 5 pm, Vutete sent her husband a message informing him to return home.

She also sent another message to her husband’s brother informing him that she had come across a video of a naked woman in Mironga’s laptop. She invited the brother to the house.

The court heard that Mironga and his brother drove back home.

According to State papers, Vutete’s six-month-old baby was sleeping on a couch close to where Mironga and his brother were sitting.

After a while Vutete came out of the bedroom fuming.

She headed for the stove and took a pot filled with boiling water and poured it on her husband.

Mironga reacted swiftly and ducked, resulting in the scalding of the sleeping baby.

The baby was rushed to Parirenyatwa Hospital.

Vutete’s baby later died on November 22 after spending a week in the intensive care unit at Parirenyatwa Hospital.

She was subsequently arrested.
