Brothers spared jail for bashing cop

MUTARE - Two Marange brothers were yesterday spared jail after attacking a policeman who had cuffed one of the siblings.

Hosea Marange, 41, assaulted the cop all over the body while he was being arrested for alleged robbery.

He was handed a conditional discharge after being convicted of the offence of assaulting a police officer.

His brother Tirivaviri Marange, 36, also walked free from Mutare Magistrates’ Court but was ordered to do 175 hours community service,  prompting fury from police leaders.

The brothers were handed effective five-month jail terms which were commuted to 175 hours of community service by magistrate Sekai Chiundura.

Hosea will serve at Marange Training Centre and Tirivaviri at Sedza Primary School.

Prosecuting, Fletcher Kabenzi told the court how on September 30 around 2200 hours, constable Munyaradzi Nyazimbi was attacked for effecting an arrest on Hosea who himself also assisted in the assault.

It is the State’s case that Nyazimbi was on patrol at Marange Business Centre when he was approached by an unknown man reporting that he had been robbed of his money.

Nyazimbi asked the man to help identify the culprit and was taken to a group of gamblers under a tree at the shopping centre.

Upon noticing the approaching cop, the group fanned in all directions but Nyazimbi managed to get hold of Hosea and handcuffed him.

Tirivaviri, noticing that his brother had been arrested, charged towards the cop, demanding his release. The cop did not budge. He  started pelting the cop with stones before assaulting him all over his body.

The duo tore Nyazimbi’s uniform and seized his drab cap.

He was only rescued by Mutambara Douglas.
