James Bond's 'Spectre' premieres in Zim

HARARE - It was all glitz and glamour when prominent business people, politicians, motor enthusiasts and showbiz entrepreneurs gathered at Ster-Kinekor, Sam Levy Village in Borrowdale on Wednesday night to watch the latest James Bond movie -Spectre.

The black-tie event, organised by Premier Auto Service and the British Embassy in Zimbabwe, had all the ingredients of a dream premiere with guests walking on a red carpet and being treated to a cocktail before the movie was shown.

In addition to the dinner cocktail, guests were also given a packet of popcorn, a soft drink and mineral water to go with the movie.

Premier Auto Services, which has a Jaguar-Land Rover dealership, wanted guests to have a feel of two of their cars - Range Rover Sport SVR, Defender and Jaguar C-X75 - that feature in the block buster movie.

The movie revolves around James Bond (Daniel Craig) who receives a cryptic message that eventually makes him travel to Mexico City and Rome, where he meets a beautiful widow of an infamous criminal - Monica Bellucci.

After infiltrating a secret meeting, Bond uncovers the existence of the sinister organisation Spectre. The rest is hours of powerful action that will leave you on the edge of your seat.

The 24th James Bond movie, released early this month, opened to a record-smashing $80 million across the world in its first week of showing.

In the UK, the film has taken in an estimated $64 million in its first seven days of release, the biggest opening run in that country's box-office history, according to a statement by the makers.

Spectre took the mark from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, which was also released on a Monday and totalled $82 million in 2004.

Albert Broccoli's EON Productions, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios and Sony Pictures Entertainment announced that the film set a record for the highest seven-day gross in UK box-office history, overtaking the last James Bond film, Skyfall.

The 2012 film went on to gross $1,1 billion worldwide, and become the top franchise performer of all time.

"We are so grateful to all our James Bond fans and the British public for making Spectre's debut in the UK box office history," producers Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli said in a statement.

"What an incredible thrill it is for us at MGM to see how James Bond continues to deliver such excitement to his fans. This record-breaking support from UK audiences for what is our 24th outing is nothing short of amazing. We can't wait for the rest of the world to see Spectre," said Gary Barber, MGM Chairman and chief executive.

Spectre's cast include Lea Seydoux, Ben Whishaw, Naomie Harris, Monica Bellucci and Ralph Fiennes.IT will be released to the Zimbabwean public soon.
